Upgrading Garmin GPS mapping software to V7
Yahoo Message Number: 56649
We bought a 2610 early this year.  I really love this unit and when I heard that map upgrades were available - I wrote Garmin to get the details.  I think you will be interested in the answer so I will post it here since I have not seen this level of detail before.

Thank you for contacting Garmin.

It would be a charged update if you did pursue it.  Garmin does mapping updates for City Nav North America roughly yearly, each time using the latest data it can get from its vendors (NavTeq) when it sits down to do it. These mapping updates are completely optional.
Garmin has a transition window that goes back to June 1, 2005...goes back a couple of months so if a person ORIGINALLY & NEWLY unlocked V6 to his unit on or after that, he'd be eligible to get the V7 Update at no charge.  We have to put some kind of cutoff date with that, though.
I DO know it is a chunk of money to get the mapping update, but please understand Garmin pays royalties on this data and only licenses it...we do not own it.  Further, getting data for use with the intent of loading it directly to GPS units incredibly inflates the price we have to pay to license the data  (and some of that has to be passed along, unfortunately). The routable data we use in this product is from NavTeq, a respected map data vendor, often regarded as the overall best in the business.

It is a very different market, when you get into the realm of licensing the detail for loading the maps to a GPS (this plays to the cost).  I understand it may seem in some ways a map is a map, but the intended use and nature of the data (GPS loadable or PC based, vector vs. raster, unit routable with units that support such vs. not, etc.) all make a huge difference in the equation.  For instance,  companies that make PC based mapping products are in a completely different market from Garmin...they do not have to pay as high a price as Garmin does, even for sometimes the same basic core map detail, because of our final intended use of the data (for direct transfer to Garmin's compatible GPS units).
Garmin's policy is pretty comparable to that of others in this market.

We republish this product roughly yearly.  And again this is completely optional.  If you want to skip this one and possibly pursue a later one, that is by all means there.

If you do think about doing it, this would involve ordering a "City Navigator North America DVD" update disk...installing on the same PC on which you have the older...and unlocking it (unlocking is where the update fee comes in).

Have a good week!

Thank you again for your interest in Garmin GPS.  Have you seen our online Map Viewer?  Preview the basic data in many of the MapSource products firsthand.

Wow, as someone who just bought a 2610 a few weeks ago, this is very good news indeed!!! I love the Streetpilot but I thought it quite the ripoff that I was going to have to cough up 150 clams to get accurate info {some info was, indeed, a bit dated in my area}.

I owe you big time!!!

Thanks,

Well, I hope they've made some major improvements for NW Canada and Alaska.  The road placement data seems to be pretty poor in V6.  When following a route, the 2610 frequently thinks we are off the road (somewhere in the forest I guess!) and tries to calculate a new route.
It gets old pretty quick.

Just read your email and I think you are in luck because I just posted my 2003 L D for sale yesterday. It is an I B 26 1/2 model with the cab over bed also. It has the dinette that is expandable and will come as close to filling your needs as any L D I have seen.
My unit is like new, only used for 4 trips to Texas and has only 13,600 miles on the Ford V-10 motor. I would place it side by side with a new one and save you several thousand dollars as well as not having to wait 8 months for delivery. I also have a Saturn station wagon I tow with only 16,000 miles. Its a 2001 fully loaded with leather, air, power features. I can really save you some money on the entire package and since you live in So Cal it should be fairly easy to see in person. I live in Arroyo Grande in San Luis Obispo county.

My phone is 805 489 8077 or cell # 805 252 4244

Look forward to hearing from you.

"HELLO EVERYONE ......WELL WE DON'T HAVE OUR LD YET STILL TRYING TO FIND ONE..."
Welcome to the group! If you go into this website's Files section and open the Frequently Asked Questions folder, you'll find a very helpful document called "How do I shop for a used LD?" that has lots of hints and tips.
"WOULD LIKE A LD 26.5 ......ISLAND BED ....NEEDS TO SLEEP 6 FOR CHILDREN AND GRAND CHILDREN"
I don't think the 26.5' island bed model will allow that. As I read the floorplan, you have only two beds with that floorplan: one in back and one over the cab. It doesn't look as if there is a dinette bed. And by the way, the 30' IB model also won't sleep six--it has no overcab bed. Your best bet is probably a 26.5' midbath. LD's most popular floorplan will sleep six, and provides ample privacy for the kind of multi-generation family outing you describe. Converting the rear couches to beds is a matter of a few minutes.
Since you're in southern CA, I highly recommend a visit to the Lazy Daze factory. Spend an afternoon walking through the various models and looking at the floorplans to see what will work for you. There's no better way to make your decision!
By the way, typing in all caps is the online equivalent of SHOUTING. I know you didn't mean to do that, so why not turn off the caps lock key and keep the tone conversational? :-) While you're at it, we like to use our real names here, because the Yahoo handles are anonymous (not to say confusing!)...so feel free to introduce yourself and tell us a little about your background.

Well, Andy, not quite true - the 30' won't sleep 6 adults comfortably.  The 30 footers 2001 and earlier, I believe, allowed the pullout dinette to be converted to a bed.  If two kids slept there, and the pullout couch sleeps 2, and 2 can sleep in the permanent queen bed - that makes 6.

We just returned from a 3 week trip, taking our son, his wife and two children, 9 and 5 yrs old.  Son and wife slept comfortably on the pullout couch.  I made a platform which converted the dinette to a bed, and pulled out it held the two grandkids perfectly.  It is 72" x 39".  With both dinette and couch pulled out, they touched, thus making a cozy family sleeping area. With Pat and me in the queen, 6 slept very nicely.  It was kind of a "by the numbers" setting up and dismantling, but it worked very well.  Fortunately, we only slept 6 while traveling.  At the lake, the others stayed in a house while we enjoyed our private lake home on wheels.

Thanks for the info, CHris! I was talking about current thirty-footers--I should have made that plain. Anybody know whether today's 30' LDs do or do not allow the dinette to be used as a third bed? The floorplan doesn't show it as being possible, but it would be good to hear from an actual owner of a recent-model (2004/2005) rig.
