Shocks April 15, 2013, 04:37:41 pm Yahoo Message Number: 138344With respect to the much discussed question of Brilstein shocks versus softer shocks such as the original Ford ones, I am in a position to add my 2 cents worth. On the 90k mile inspection of our 2001 26.5 RB, the mechanic indicated that the upper bushings of the Bilsteins originally installed in 2001 needed replacing. He did not have the proper tools, so after checking around, I went to GCR Tire Center in Shertz, TX to have it done. They unfortunately bent one of the Bilstein shafts and the two front shocks had to be replaced. They could not get new Bilsteins locally, but installed a heavy-duty Monroe which they said was a good replacement. The shop foreman said that in his opinion, the Bilsteins were the best available. The net result as far as I could tell is that the ride is better when hitting bumps on the open road, but the LD seems to have more side-to-side sway than before. When sitting at a left turn lane on a highway waiting while cars & trucks whizzed by at 55mph in the next lane, we could feel the effect of the passing vehicles much more than before. My opinion may be based by being accustomed to the Bilsteins after 12 years of driving with them, but I think I prefer their ride to that of the Monroes despite the softer bump response.HTHBarry

I had all 4 Monroe shocks replaced with Bilsteins on my 01 TK at 66K Miles. The difference is like night and day. Much improved stability and I have yet to bottom them out on severe off-road bumps. I can't speak to the Koni's but I have used them on Motorcycles in the past with great results.Bob

Bill, we had them put on at the factory on our '02 31' and I have no complaints about handling. I have no comparison to driving it with stock shocks, but I think he handles quite well for a 14,000# motorhome.Chris H
Re: Shocks Reply #4 – April 15, 2013, 08:50:03 pm Yahoo Message Number: 138359We ordered the Bilsteins on our 2008 31' and hated the bone-jarring ride. Replaced them with Konis and were much happier. Since 2008, Ford has improved the suspension, I hear. I would suggest that you wait and see. And remember, much of the advice comes from people with 27' and 24' LD's. Big difference. Linda A.
