Since Marylin and Bob recently adopted a new LD w/ Chevy 454 engine this post may be timely.
My 1995 Chevy 454 powered FL has been an excellent performer and I am more than happy with it. It has 87,000 miles currently. Since getting it I have rambled nearly 35,000  miles, from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific, from the southern border to  the Canadian border, eh.
She climbs mountains with ease, and can cruise the freeways in the fast lane when necessary. It ain't because of the Finish First polish. ;^)
Because the engine is really a bit large for the engine compartment, air flow  is barely adequate and  it is important to monitor the engine temperature. I have never had a problem but, others have. I use synthetic oil (mobil One) which reduces the operating temp a few degrees. Change it sooner than later. I never let the coolant get below the full mark, every drop helps. I monitor the temperature gauge and that determines my speed. i.e. Climbing steep grades if the temp. rises reduce speed. Maintain the cooling system. If you don't know when the cooling system was flushed and serviced get it done and do so every 2 years.   Check and  change the belts, radiator hoses , heater hoses, rubber fuel lines. The heat is murder on these and they may look good but like tires, items over 5 years are deteriorated whether you see it or not. When stopping for fuel, food or whatever, do not be in a hurry to shut down the engine. I usually let mine idle for 8-10 minutes. This allows some heat to dissapate helping prevent the exhaust manifold from warping. Warping can be a problem with all the big blocks, Ford 460, Dodge 440, as well as the 454. Actually the issues mentioned here and the maintainence are pretty much the same with any big block engine.
Mine at 87,000 miles still has compression  right at specifications, no oil leaks, and uses no oil. The good news is, the 454 provides more than adequate power, mine gets 10 mpg at 65 mph, and partnered with the great Lazy Daze coach, has been a pleasure to own. I've had the Ford 454, and prefer the Chevy.

PS.For any member of the group, it is allways better to write to a
person with a first name...Of course it's your right and your

decision, don't feel pressured at all, but, if or when you feel at
ease...
