Talking about Verizon

Just received my new Verizon phone yesterday. Based on the super info. on the Yahoo Internetbycellphone group, I now have free internet/e-mail access in addition to my voice package. If you're interested in Internet/E-mail access, check out the Verizon tutorial in that discussion group. It's in the Files section.

Ed,

Which Verizon phone did you select?
One of these days I'm going to have to replace my old StarTac, but it just keeps on working well.

Bob,

Thanks.

I have read the Consumer's Report about cell phones.
I'm also waiting for the introduction of the new 3G phones by Verizon, but they will probably be more expensive than I want to pay.

It is almost time for my Verizon "New Every Two" telephone exchange, and I would like to replace my four-year old Motorola V120e with some sort of a flip phone.  I have heard that the newer Motorola units are not as reliable as the older ones!

We have an external antenna on top of the coach, so need a model that can be plugged into that.  Would like to have the ability to use the phone as a modem, and I *think* (Jonna???) that if you ask for Get It Now, or the ability to take pictures, then some other advantageous feature is activated.  Also, need to be able to use the phone AND charge the battery at the same time.

I *don't* need to be able to play games, or download my e-mail directly to the phone, or do anything super fancy with it.

I have a Verizon, 150 Anytime minute, National Access Plan, with 3500 free weekend minutes, so would like to be able to download mail to the computer using this phone as a modem on occasion.

Motorola is not a MUST.  Would entertain switching accompanying peripherals for a more reliable main phone set.

Suggestions?

Virtual hugs,

I've been using a Motorola T730 with my Verizon account for about five months now. It's a very compact flip phone, works flawlessly with my Mac for internet access at up to about 80kbps, and syncs effortlessly with my Apple Address Book via Apple's iSync utility. It also has much longer battery life than my old StarTAC did.
I'm sure there are other phones that work, but I'm very happy with this one. If you go this route, be sure to buy your USB data cable directly from Motorola--theirs is the only one I've found that not only fits the phone (one third-party cable I tried didn't!), but has an auxiliary port so that you can run the phone from external power at the same time you have the data cable plugged in.
By the way...Verizon, while not perfect, came out on top in every category--again--in CU's latest report on cell service providers. :-)

Barry, I'm not Ed, but I know what you mean about the old StarTac.
Unfortunately, ours bit the dust a couple of weeks ago so we were forced to replace it.  We ended up getting an LG VX4500 from the local Verizon Wireless store.  It was $30 with a $40 credit for signing up for another year, but since it is USB rather than serial we bought a new Mobile Office Kit (Cable, drivers, software) for another $40 so ended up out $30.
The only problem is that we have 2 laptops that we were using to access the internet thru the cell phone.  One runs XP-Home and was no problem to get up and running with the new phone, but the old one runs Win 98.  The new software wouldn't load with an error stating that Win 98 does not support USB modems.  I think we'll just stick with the XP one for internet access for now, but thought you might be interested in one of the ramifications of replacing the old StarTac.  Of course the new one has lots more bells & whistles....but then again we don't make much use of most of them.

I'm also near every-two-years time and Verizon told me that National Access now provides 500 peak minutes for the same $39.95 I currently pay for 400 minutes.  I don't need the extra minutes to talk but 500 makes at least some daytime e-mail chcking more practical. From 9 pm to 6 am it's free minutes but it's not always convenient to wait.

A phone-to-computer cable that re-charges the phone while it's in use is important for web browsing.  My older Motorola 720c cable from Verizon does not re-charge in use.

Ed,

Got the LG VX6100. As of last week, it was the least expensive
phone VZ offers that met my minimum requirements and could be used to access the internet. My requirements were (1) must be tri-mode so it can be used in analog areas. It's tri-mode. Be careful of digital only phones. They can't even call 911 in analog only areas. (2) must have a port for an external antenna. It does.
In addition, VZ has minimum  requirements for internet access. The phone must (1) Have a compatable mobile office kit. It does.  (2) Must  Be "GIN" and internet capable. It is. After factoring all these requirments in, the LG VX6100 was my choice. $80 after rebates, plus $40 for the mobile office kit.  Then I signed up for the Americas Choice plan, 450 minutes, free nights/weekends.
$40/month.

Tried it out for the first time Tuesday.  Given my VERY limited electronic/computer skills, it actually worked right out of the box with only a few minor glitches.

Need any more info., let me know.

Ed

Bob, I have the 400 minute plan also.  Are you saying that you automatically get 500 minutes now or did you call and ask for the extra minutes?  Please explain.
