"Maybe LD will consider a similar model as a new manufacturing challenge! Ya think?"
Oh, yeah! ;-) LOL! This will really shake up the RV industry, all right...a crudely Photoshopped "Conceptual Design" on a free Geocities homepage is always *so* impressive. ;-)

Joan:
This configuration is relatively common in Sao Paulo and Curitiba cities, here in Brasil, not as  RV's, but as city buses, in some heavy traffic lines, operating in special, dedicated, lanes.
They seem exactly equal to the RV shown in the site, and use a Volvo- built chassis, with the engine installed in a central area (of the front module), under floor position. They are known as "line eaters" and, as says my eyeballs, are 50 footers or even a little more than that, since if the front part seems to have about the same proportions, the rear part of the city buses here seem to have some more overhang.

The "accordion" area between the two parts permits a little easier maneuvering, but they are absolutely clumsy and impractical inside a city, except when operating in dedicated lanes.

There's a class of RV called "toterhomes" that look something like the "split recreational vehicle."  The toterhome is a medium duty truck chassis (Peterbilt, Freightliner, International, etc) with an RV body covering most of the frame, leaving just enough room to attach a 5th wheel trailer.  Here are a few examples:

These vehicles are made for the long-distance traveler, for whom 100,000 miles a year is just getting started.
And here's a "split recreation vehicle" from the other end of the RV spectrum -- an expedition camper demonstration project

The Maximog is really special, but costs as much as a Prevost bus conversion!
