Aluminum and Fiberglass

On my 2003 LD MB, the lowest panel is fiberglass. You can determine if you have fiberglass on the lowest panel by looking at the panel and feeling the panel at the generator access door or inside the lowest storage compartments.
I do not know if the situation would be the same on an '86 multiplan.

Fiberglass can be repaired with glass cloth and 2 part hardening resin.  This makes a strong repair.  If the damage were limited to the lowest panel,  I would find such a repair acceptable and perhaps preferrable to having the entire panel replaced.  If done skillfully and properly painted, one might not be able to tell from the outside that the area had been repaired.

My suggestion would be to take photos of the damage and send to LD to see what they think or visit LD with the vehicle if nearby.
