For those who'd rather not deal with roof mounting regular kayaks, there's an option. We, like maybe a half dozen other glider folks with motorhomes at Minden, just bought two Stearns 1K-116 inflatable kayaks. We got ours from West Marine, as theirs are blue and on clearance right now for $249 each (includes paddle, pump, seat, and duffle that stows easily. Reviews at:

http://www.paddling.net/Reviews/showReviews.html?prod=764

Since there's still a foot of snow outside, I've only inflated one on the family room floor. It's well made, inflates quickly, and more importantly, easily folds back down to fit in its duffle bag - though not quite as small a package as when it arrived in the box as I didn't use the pump to suck the air out.

West Marine's model number for this kayak is:

3733136

and if you go to:
 http://www.pricezilla.com/west-marine-coupons.html

you can get the code for a $20 off coupon. I had to call West Marine by phone to order as I couldn't get their website to accept the coupon code. When doing this, I also had to tell them about their on- line price of $249, giving a total of just $229 each + shipping. You can save shipping by doing a store pick up, but it's cold outside so we let UPS do the shivering (g).

all the best,

Nice little boats at a great price, just be aware of their limitations. Inflatables are very sensitive to the wind due to the large amount of surface or `sail' area exposed to the wind. They can very difficult to paddle into the wind, so always paddle upwind so you can return with the wind at your back. If you paddle on the ocean or a large lake, check the weather report to make an offshore wind is not in the forecast (you do not want to get blown out to sea).
Inexpensive inflatables can get 'holed' very easily so have a patch kit and pump available (in the boat if you are paddling far away from the LD). Watch out for sharp rocks and any other object that can poke the thin plastic skin. Inexpensive boats usually only have one or two air chambers so any hole will disable or sink the craft.  Control the urge to fish, hooks are bad.
Always wear a properly fitted PFD, they have save my behind in the past.
If you get bite by the kayak bug, be aware that the inflatables will end up in the garage and you will be looking for hard-shell boat or a high quality folding boat.  There is a huge difference, I know, my garage has held all the variations. Our inflatable rotted from lack of use once the hard shells arrived.
With a rack, like ours, loading a hard shell is not that difficult.

Hi, Where do you live in Minden?  I live in Johnson Lane on a acre with a old horse, chickens, ducks and more.  I can see the gliders flying from my kitchen window! Kay Lokelani, 86 multiplan

Also, we have 3 of the inflatable kayaks made by Stern.  I got them on the Sharper image auction site 2 years ago.  We use them all the time at Lake Tahoe, going down the Truckee River, even in the ocean by San Diego! Have fun!

Got a Sea Eagle S330 {or whatever} a couple years ago on sale and have never used it. It sits in Ruby's belly now in the passenger side front storage space. Hope to get it out a lot this summer.

I live off Foothill, about 3 miles south of Kingsbury Grade & just at the base of Job's Peak. Bought the house 2 years ago as a "vacation" home . . . that lasted all of a year and then we were full timing in Carson Valley - - ain't it beautiful here?! We also did the horsey thing and chickens too (lots) on the small ranch we left behind in CA. Will probably be selling the ranch this summer as we know we'll never move back.

Yonder lives in a 72 X 60 hangar at Minden airport, along with a couple of gliders, some planes, and tool toys. One of those gliders in your kitchen window might be me!
