Hi all,
How do you all find good places to park for the night? There must be a really good map/book listing all the good spots! BLM and Forest Service sites, commercial RV parks, etc.

If I have my druthers, I prefer not to stay at commercial RV parks or park on side streets or behind supermarkets - - unless I have to.
And though I'd stay in a WalMart parking lot if there are no signs saying not to . . . Walmart means urban and I'd rather camp in less crowded areas. I have a Garmin GPS, so that may help some with the commercial RV parks. I know I can Google search for BLM sites, though their descriptions may not be reliable in determining if the site would really be good for a LD. Recommendations?

Bumper:
We make good use of the Trailer Life Campground Directory (Woodall's also publishes one) which lists "all" commercial and Federal/state/municipal campgrounds.  Yes, I know many people claim that it does not list all of them, but we have yet to discover a public campground which was not listed therein.
Because we belong to Passport America, for commercial campgrounds we always first check their directory.

National Forests allow you to park wherever it will not impede traffic, so inside them we look for a scenic place to boondock, always leaving an escape route that we can drive forward out of, as we had one scary incident when we had pulled nose first into a clearing and some local toughs came along and began talking about making trouble.
I backed out of it OK, but next time I want to be able to go forward - I have enough power to push any pickup out of the way if need be.

If you have more specific questions, E-mail me.

Hi Bumper, We try to avoid RV parks when we can. We had our fill of them during our travel trailer days. There are plenty of guide books for the various parks, national, state, BLM, etc. There are two books we heartily reccomend: Don Wright's "Free Campgounds"; there is a West and East edition. While the title of the book is "free", most of the places in the book are almost free, some very inexpensive, some places request a "donation", and others are free! Many of the places mentioned are community RV parks; you might be amazed at the places available. Now, when we leave Cleveland and head to Wyoming, we know exactly where we will stay each night, and each place is safe, quiet, and darn near free! Some even have electric hook ups, most have water available and convenient dumpstations. With this book, we have so far avoided Camp Wallyworld.

Bumper If you are going thru Texas and going south get on Texas 385 at Dalhart you will find a free city park in every little town with full hookups some will have water and elec. and with a dump they will usually be at the Fair grounds or Rodeo Grounds and if nothing is going on it will be nice an quiet. Most however have a donation box at te gate but if your short thats OK.

I don't know (g) . . . maybe it's just the ex-cop in me . . . I'd sure be tempted to step outside with a pump action 12 GA shotgun, rack a round into the chamber, and ask those young toughs if they know any good places to go hunting :c)

Reminds me of a true story that occured just before I joined the Oakland PD. A really funny cop (good guy, later died of stomach cancer), went to help at a traffic stop in West Oakland. Back in those days, with the Black Panthers and all, when you did a stop the locals would come out of the woodwork and surround you. Anyway, the surrounded cop calls for help and our freind comes up with lights and siren blaring. Standard arrival proceedure called for waiting 'till the last moment to hit the brakes hard so as to slide in, tires squeeling and smoking for effect. He leaps out of the squad car with shotgun in hand, levels it at the surrounding crowd, swings it back and forth while holding in the action-bar-release button (this button allows you to pump the shotgun without firing and each time you do, a live round gets flipped out of the chamber onto the ground). Anyway, he starts pumping the gun while yelling, "Hey, how do you work this thing - - how do you work this thing!" Needless to say, the crowd darn near instantly evaporates . . .

The two books we use the most are Don Wright's Guide to Free Campgrounds, and Coleman's National Forest Service Campground directory.  In addition, we use Camping with the Corps.  All of these books, plus others, can be found at:
 http://rvbookstore.com/shop/cv.aspx?c=50&m=2

I image they can also be found on other books sites such as Amazon.com -- but I like the above site because all the books are RV related.

Linda & Earl, As I was typing my post to this thread, you guys were posting some similar info, great minds work alike!;-)

I had forgot to mention that we bought our copies of Don Wright's books at Camping World. If you're looking for something to use one of their coupons on, it makes it almost "free" too!

Although the big directories do a pretty good job of listing federal and state campgrounds, we've found quite a few other public campgrounds that aren't listed in any of the big directories -- particularly city and county campgrounds.  That's one of the main reasons we rely so heavily on Don Wright's book (previously mentioned).

Linda & Earl,
Thanks for the tip on the books.  Just returned from Amazon.  He has a new one that is to be released next month for the Western Edition.
