We like the campground at Tuolumne Meadows - quiet during the day when all the tent campers head to the Valley. Bears seem to leave RVs alone, but not so cars at the trailhead parking lots. They will fold down a front door and rip out the rear seat to get to a pocket-sized box of raisins in the trunk!

--- I was in the eastern Sierra a few weeks ago; while walking the dog very early one morning, I passed several cars and pickups in the campground, all with their doors standing wide open; the resident bears had made their foraging rounds. They were successful; one group had left their food boxes on the seat of their unlocked pickup, and the bears made short work of it. Bear boxes in each campsite and warning signs all over the place, but this bunch told the camp host that they didn't believe that a bear could open a car door!

The camp host also told me that the largest of the local bears makes a regular Monday night run to the "bear proof" dumpsters; campers leave the dumpster lid un-secured, and the garbage truck comes Tuesday morning! The bears are a lot smarter than many of the campers! ;-)

It amazes me that some campers don't take precautions against Bears. I was camping in Bridgeport one year when a black bear decided to visit someone's icebox they had left outside. The bear helped himself to a container of potato salad and some sandwiches in the cooler. The camper returned and threw a rock at the bear. It chased him down the road for awhile before returning and finishing off the contents.

An animal that has the potential to eat you needs to be taken very seriously.

In my experience, that is not necessarily saying much.

Apparently Steve, they know how to lock themselves in cars as well, and they like Subarus!
