We made it home!

Hi guys!

Well, we picked up our 26.5 RB at the factory on Dec 21. Dave gave us a great walkaround and pre-flight and loads of great tips. Since we faced a cross-country trip back to our home in Georgia, we decided to stay a few nights at the East Shore RV campground while we familiarize ourselves with the rig.

The day we started our journey, the weather folks were saying the Santa Ana winds were about to crank up. We tried to beat the winds and get out of the LA basin but got nailed anyway.

The winds were gusting at 70 MPH and some unloaded 18 wheelers were literally tipping over (truckers said the gusts were more like 80 MPH in places). Authorities closed I-15 to all high-profile vehicles. Even being on I-10, the winds were fierce! Then came the sandstorms in the desert past Palm Springs. Folks, this was a weather event of Biblical proportions!

Well, we finally made it to Apache Junction, AZ where we spent Christmas with family. On the 27th, we continued our trek east and stayed at KOA's, a State Park, Good Sam parks...all of which were great. But a persistent storm or series of storms followed us until entering the Georgia border where we met our first sign of sunlight in days!

The I-10 Interstate highway system is in terrible shape in places and not isolated to any particular state. The road is just in dire need of resurfacing. In spite of all that, and weather from hell, the LD came through with flying colors...although I would recommend that anyone doing the same trip consider lowering the tire pressures consistent with the load you are carrying. For us, we were light but the factory had the tires at maximum pressure (their policy and a safe one I guess). I planned to change the pressures when we got back and had our rig weighed and tire stem extensons installed. In retrospect, I should have had that done in California. We were knocked around quite a bit...

So, anyone considering buying a new LD should know that it's the best RV for the money. Sturdy, solid and handles great!  The quality is very evident. A lesser RV from a dealer would have had us arrive home with four wheels and a seat as the coachwork self-destructed along the highway!

See you on the road...

Thanks for the update Bryan & Midge.  We expect to follow your tracks in February with our '05MB on our way back to Charlotte, NC.  Getting the tire pressure down to match the load will be a priority.

Good to see another LD in the Southeast!

When you do your factory walk-through, you can ask them (okay, insist) that they lower the air pressure in the tires. They will ask you what pressure you would like and, even if you ask, will not tell you what pressure would be appropriate.  We chose 60/70 as we had no real clue and figured that'd be good enough. They adjusted the pressure as we asked.

Brenda & Alex,

Choose the route home carefully. We took I-10 rather than I-40 primarily because of the snow, ice and mudslides on the northern route. Watch the Weather Channel and be careful!

Thanks Robert. Drop a line when in Savannah although we're heading out to Memphis next week to visit our 8th (count'em) grandchild. Baby Elise arrived just last week! Gotta get out there so we can do a proper job of spoiling her

This supports my theory why LD ships with stock valves: When they do so it's Ford's problem/risk if anything goes wrong.  If LD replaces stock valves with long ones, it's LD's problem/risk if anything goes wrong.
