Weatherproof Entry for Roofmounted Hardware

Sarah,

A few weeks back you wrote in answer to an inquiry concerning LD options that the factory had installed for you some sort of an all- purpose covered entry to facilitate the routing of antenna wire, etc. from a source on the roof down into the interior of the coach in a water proof manner.

You didn't have a name for it but described it as I recall.  Could you describe it in any more detail and in so doing, confirm that my memory is not failing?

I am thinking it would be a neat way to route my GPS antenna wire down into the entertainment center and would perhaps provide a ready opportunity to route wiring of future purchases (satellite radio, etc) as well.

Thanks, Nate Walker Tacoma

I'm obviously not Sarah, and she'd doubtless most thankful (g) - - however, I'll pre-answer anyway.

LD uses an aluminum "roof vent". It has a round flanged base, a short pipe going up, and then a "mushroom like" cap at the top with vent holes under. If you remove the cap, the pipe is revealed. To use this as a wiring route, you will need to stuff

Thanks John - your description is right-on. It's a reinforced spot under that stove-pipe looking thing. Not sure why that's necessary, but that's part of the deal. And, it's not open when you drive your LD off the lot. You drill after you get all the wires you can possibly imagine that you're ever going to want to thread through the hole. Then you fill it up with that stuff that you buy from the factory.  Parlastic, or the new stuff that's not Parlastic. Can't remember which, now.
Then about a month or two or three, after you do all this, something new comes out that you want an antenna for, and you curse the day you ever filled the thing up. Cause now it's going to be the devil to pay to get it out. Have to heat it up with a hair dryer and scoop it out with a spoon. How do I know this? Guess.

Sarah,

I've been there a few times myself (g).

When sealing a wire run through a bulkhead or roof fitting, where there's a good strong possiblility that you might need to add wires later, one method is to use an easily removable filler or blocking material such as chunks of foam to fill the majority of the voids around the wires. Then cover that, on the weather side, with just a th

SARAH ! what are you doing running around on top of your motorhome and with a spoon in your hand? Your Mama told you not to run with sharp things in your hand. Ha Ha  Hope you and Pete had a nice trip. As I have turned into a genealogy freak I ran across a little info that might interest youall. "there is an urban legend that the Blackard's were once Loyalist members of the Orange County Blackwood family that changed thier name as a result of a family dispute at the time of the revolutionary war" Some think that this is nonsense but who knows.
Happy Trailes and see you down the road.
Could be cousin maby Robert .

Well, duh. Last night just before I drifted off to snooze-land, I realized why it was reinforced. Here's the deal. Because the factory reinforces it, there's solid wood from just under the skin of the roof to the ceiling. That way, when you drill through the roof, you're making a little tunnel through wood. That way, you have a little wooden 'tube' to thread the wires through, and a little 'tube' to fill up with the Parlastic (or whatever it is now).

You're also assured that you're not going to be drilling through a location where a wire harness is.

Hmmmm. Well - I hope this is clear.

Well cuz, that would be a cousin-by-marriage. Blackwood's my first husband's name. When he died 22 years ago, I just kept it 'cause it's way too much trouble to change names. Case in point - it was your side of the family that went to all that trouble.
Pete and I are really having a great time, even if we're not traveling in Mz. Daisy. What we ARE doing, that's RV-related, is watching all the time for great places to come back to when we come to the NE next fall (I hope, I hope, I hope). Up in the Berkshires, and down through Conneticut, we saw all sorts of neat places.
Cross your fingers for warmer weather - I want to go to Times Square and watch that ball come down at mid-night, but this ole gal isn't going to go if she'd freeze her toosh off. I want warmth & comfort!!!!! Forecast for near or in the 50's we'll see.

Well-l-l-l-l. Exactly where were you last year?  This is a really good idea. I'll save this one for the next must-have thing with an antenna. Wow. You folks are so darned smart. A lot of horse-sense to boot.
