Has anyone taken a LD trip on the Natchez trace?  If so, what were the highlights, lowlights, restaurants, RV parks and State parks you liked.

We were on the Natchez Trace last week- but only from Vicksburg to Natchez--It was beautiful. If the rest of it is the same--It is a worthwhile ride.
Can't really speak to the facilities since we didn't use them. We went to the National Military Park Battleground in Vicksburg and enjoyed a few hours there.

Three years ago we traveled one end to the other.  As I remember there were no services right on the trace, you have to leave it for campgrounds and restaurants, but there are many exits.  I have just two cautions - do not exceed the speed limnit (50 if I remember).
This is federal land, and the trace police leave no speeders unpunished, and the fines are severe.  The second is not to pass any stop - we started out by stopping only at those that seemed interesting, but soon discovered that they were all good and so we went back and started over again.
I highly recommend it.  You will be amazed at how a century or more of traffic made it a huge and deep rut in the countryside.

Enjoy

We stayed at a campground right on the trace. It was in Rocky Springs, about 20 miles south of Vicksburg. They had water only and fairly clean rest rooms. Not sure if it was state or federal but it was free. I seem to remember mostly pull through sites. We stayed there on Memorial Day weekend and it wasn't full. This was 2 years ago.

These two web sites (the second is the first page of many links) will help you plan your trip:

http://www.nps.gov/natr/
 http://www.byways.org/search?q=natchez+trace

As Gus said, there are no services (gas stations, restaurants, etc.)  along the Trace itself.  There is a state park campground in TN, and one campground in MS along the 450-mile route, but there are a few other campgrounds "on" the road; http://www.nps.gov/natr/pphtml/camping.html  will describe these camping options.

I drove this route in April several years ago; it was a lovely, "spring green" journey.  A fall trip would offer beautiful colors, too!  When I did the route, the traffic was light, but from what I understand now, traffic can get quite heavy along parts of the Trace during the peak tourist seasons, i.e., later spring through summer and into October.

Ross go to  (Art's look-up site) and enter "Natchez Trace".  There are several messages there that might help you.

I live within walking distance of the Natchez Trace as it passes just North of the Jackson, MS area.  If you are not in a hurry---the speed limit is 50mph and a ticket lands you before a federal magistrate--- then I think you will enjoy the drive.

There is a convenience type store that sells gasoline on the Trace approximately 75 miles North of the Jackson, MS area.  I know of no other such facilities actually on the Trace.  This should not present any problems because you can get off in any of the cities and towns that are near the Trace to get needed supplies.
I have camped at the Natchez State Park, near the Southern end of the Trace and at the Trace State Park, West of Tupelo, MS.  Both are very nice.  Rocky Springs is not really a park.  It is more like a rest area that has primitive camp sites along with a bath house.
Currently construction is under way, with a scheduled completion date of mid 2005, to link the northern and southern sections.  The southern section ends near Clinton, MS and you must travel on I-20, I- 220 and I-55 to get back on the Trace near Ridgeland, MS to continue your trip.
Should you decide to drive the Trace, let me know if I can be of any assistance.

Hi,

I just returned from a southern trip and took the entire Trace back beginning at Natchez and ending in Nashville.  It is worth taking a long leisurely time and as someone else suggested, stopping frequently to absorb the history and beauty. The rest areas are tranquil and great places to have lunch and stretch your legs.  A stop at either end at a Visitor Center will get you some expert advice on hiking and a list of campgrounds at each exit.  I took two days to drive it (460 miles, + or -).

There are lots of deer around that cross right in front of you, and many places where you are driving along a ridge line with steep dropoffs and little/no shoulders on either side and although the road is really nice, rubber necking can get a tire off the asphalt in no time. I wouldn't tell you that if I hadn't done it, would I?!  :>)
