Didn't tell the wife

I am not one to post very often, but I simly HAVE to know whatever happened to the fellow who posted last week-he bought the LD and hadn't told his wife !!!

Did he post and I missed it, or has he been spending lonely nights alone in the LD without a computer in which to e-mail?

In response to Kathy and numerous other requests about my getting our Lazy Daze on my own, here is what happened:

1. Background: We had gone to RV shows for years, including the Pomona  show annually when we lived in Los Angeles, always stopping by the LD  exhibit, and visited the LD factory itself a couple of times. Everyone  there got so they recognized us on sight. Our circumstances didn't  really justify getting one because of limited free time, and having to  keep it in storage somewhere where I couldn't fiddle with it  constantly, which I dearly would have loved to do. When I retired we  moved to a rural area; now there was plenty of room for an RV, and  time to use it. So we still kept looking, but there was good news and  bad news. The good news was that there were so many RV choices, and  the bad news was that there were SO many choices. She liked  EVERYTHING, from a 19 foot Class B to a 35 foot fifth wheel. We looked  and looked together, but with no firm joint decision; this was getting  us nowhere fast so I quietly let the matter drop and started in on my own.

2. The Process: This would be our first RV. I searched online, got  pamphlets, brochures, videos, magazine subscriptions, etc. Everything  relating to an RV came in my name to a PO Box. All she knew was that I  was working on a "Project". I used this to explain my absences (a trip  to Fresno to visit the SportsMobile factory, and my trips to  Montclair). I decided that a small Class C for short trips and touring  would fit us best, and that the Lazy Daze 23.5 TK was by far the best  value and floor plan for us, and we had both always been impressed  with the Lazy Daze quality.

3. The Delivery: I took delivery on a Friday, overnighted at the Pine  Tree Motel, and spent the next few days at a campground in Lancaster,  the nearest place that I could arrange to take driving lessons at the  Dick Reed School. This gave me time to get oriented to a lot of (to  me) unfamiliar systems, and get a lot more confidence in driving the  vehicle home in one piece. That over, and since I was reasonably close  to Ridgecrest, which was sort of on the way home, I decided that I  would go to see The Tireman if he could work me in on short notice for  a set of extended metal valves. I called and talked to Sue, who talked  to Chuck. He could, and I did. (Aside: These are very, very nice  people and I still regret leaving after the work was done, and not  accepting their hospitality to stay overnight. I hope to see them both  again some time.)  The rest of the trip home was fine, with all systems working. I took  my time on the road, and pulled into our driveway nine days after  leaving, the Lazy Daze factory-fresh, and not a scratch on it.
My wife by this time had some inkling of what was going on, but the  actual choice was a total surprise. It was like one of those TV shows  where they bring you to see your made-over house, and then take the  blindfold off, and then you go wide-eyed and say nothing but ohmigod  for the next few minutes. Yes, she loved it, and approved of my color  choices.

4. Follow-up: The night after I signed the purchase order and gave the
deposit at the factory, I awoke a @2 AM in the motel in a cold-sweat panic, wondering what had I done. That over, I have never regretted this for a second, and it's probably one of the best things I could have done for us. We have already taken several day trips, and have eagerly planned for longer trips, weather and health permitting. From my standpoint, our Lazy Daze is an absolute pleasure just to be in, and a joy to drive. And it is parked close by so I can go and fiddle with it to my heart's content. Our dog loves it.

Will
PS: For anyone else thinking of doing this, your wife might not care about your four or five speed transmission, axle ratio, or the finer nuances of tire pressures and weight distribution. But if you don't get the colors and fabrics right, you are dead meat.
PPS: Aside to Kathy: Our sleeping arrangements are still fine. Better, actually.

W.

Congratulations on being a very brave man AND on buying a fine motorhome! Also kudos to your wife for being such a good sport.

Where is homebase?  Hope to meet you on the road sometime.
