Since it seems many of you have laptops...you can easily find software that will do the same thing without purchasing another piece of equipment.
In fact, you can even run your LDs down the road, the software running on your laptop, and do roadtests. You can even run the software on PDAs. I currently run software from this outfit to check my GM cars...www.digimoto.com. There are others out there as well.

cm,
Thanks for the digimoto link.  Do you find the software to be useful while you are driving?  Have you located any problems with it?  Or is it just a fun 'boy toy'?

I note it is more expensive than the simple dedicated reader on the same site.

Before buying the Actron, I checked out the PC/PDA based scanners and it was the $300+ price tag that stopped me. It would be nice to have the advanced features but, as I originally pointed out, you pay a price. For a semi-talented amateur, like myself, the advance features might never be used.
Digamoto's software cost $119 plus an additional $180 for the two interfaces needed to use the software on all cars. We have three cars, each needing a different interface.

Is it safe to assume a 2001 LD uses the PWM protocol for the interface since all other Fords listed on the Digimoto site use it? Also, does the Ford E450 output the engine rpms and temperature? I could see a running output of these useful for gear selection in hilly terrain.

Thanks,
