Ford V-10 Engine Oil Level

Since many of us have the V-10 in our LDs, I thought I would post this comment written by one of the TechSavvy writers in the December issue of MotorHome magazine:

"The Ford V-10 is one of the most overfilled engines on the road today.  Well-intentioned but poorly trained technicians read dipsticks too early instead of checking the owners' manuals that give engine oil capaity specifications.  I have a 2002 Ford pickup with a V-10 engine.  The manual calls for six quarts with a filter change.
Yet I have to watch oil-change techs like a hawk. Techs go by the dipstick instead of what their company tells them, and more important, what the specific vehicle owner's manual tells them. I go in with my owner's manual open and that usually settles the matter quickly.  The V-10 engine has a propensity to drain slowly, and early models had some miscalibrated dipsticks, which caused the engine to appear low on oil.  Early models require six quarts with an oil filter.  Later models require seven quarts with an oil filter.  The owner's manual that comes with the vehicle or chassis is the best source of engine oil capacity information."

I read that article as well, and although the information about checking the owner's manual is right on, the info about later models requiring 7 quarts with a filter change is not what my owner's manual says regarding the 2008 E 450 chassis. It says 6 quarts with a filter change for the 6.8l V10. I don't trust the dip stick, but it does show full with 6 quarts and a filter change. So, I guess I'm still not sure what is correct.

 I agree that the Ford chassis/engine manual is the last word in what and how much of whatever to use in a particular engine; following the manual's recommendations helps to ensure that the engine and chassis have a long and happy life. ;-)

As an interesting aside, our '93 Jeep Grand Cherokee had a problem with the low oil light coming on all the time.  If you started the engine to back out of the garage for a minute, then turned the engine off, the light would come on because the oil hadn't drained back down

Joan, I was just checking a few invoices from our beloved Mission Valley Ford when they were doing service work.  One was 6 QT. and one was for 7 QT.  They then referred me to Bay Area Truck and they put 8 QT. in.  Seems to be all over the place.  When I change my own oil with 6 QT. it just brings it up to the middle of those hatch marks and not to the top indicating there is room for more.
