Holy merde! That was agonizingly suspenseful to watch. The recovery was extremely dangerous.

Lots of lessons in that video. First, don't buy a gigantic triple-axle fifth wheel trailer and try to tow it with an inadequate pickup. (Heck, my opinion is "don't buy one of those, period!") Don't try to tow it up a steep hill on a dirt road with your inadequate pickup. Don't unhitch on a steep hill unless you have really really heavy duty chocks in place. Better still, just don't.

Good lord, it's a wonder none of those off-road rescue guys ended up crushed by the trailer breaking loose. (Not that it did, but it so easily could have.) And while I just criticized the owner of that behemoth trailer, the same thing could happen to any of us on a smaller scale, if we forgot to take precautions when parking on a hill. It's scary to think about.

"...the owner’s reaction as their 5th wheel rolled off into the distance."

Does anyone know how this came about? Did the owner just cut it loose?  :o   ::)

And according to the recovery guy, if the trailer hadn't been stopped by a stump, it would have kept on rolling for another 200 feet down a steep, wooded slope.

I was impressed by the chained wheel chocks used while winching, They did a great job of keeping the lightweight truck from moving while it winched the trailer

This is also a valuable lesson for those with a toad: always put it in park or gear before disconnecting and setting the parking brake.
The safety cables are the last thing removed.
