My experience with 4 Window replacements at RV Glass Solution in OR
I thought I’d post my recent experience having the 3 large sliding windows and large rear window of my 05’ 26.5 mid bath replaced at RV Glass Solutions in Coburg, OR. This due to severe fogging inside to duel panes. By and large they seemed pretty well organized. I called about 6 weeks in advance to discuss options and make arrangements. I tried using their online estimate calculator, but Lazy Daze was not listed as an option, so I emailed pictures and roughly discussed sizes. Based on all that, I was given an estimate of 1510.00 for glass and labor.
Our options for glass were:
 1. To repair the double pane windows - which consists of removing, taking them apart, cleanings, reassemble. This is guaranteed not to fog for 2 years.

2.Replace with laminate glass (2 sheets with a layer of clear material in between). This is guaranteed for life against fogging. Same price for either process.

One downside of laminate is that they could not match the tint of the original LD glass. What they had, came in Green or Double Green tint. I was originally under the impression they had a similar LD tinted laminate, but it turned out they didn’t have it in the 1/2 inch thickness required for the LD. What they had was 7/16 thickness in the dark tint. It would rattle in the frame.

Other downsides, their green tints are much lighter, so more transparent. Also, the lack of an airspace makes me believe they will transmit more cold air, and sun will heat the inside more and faster.

We decided to go with the lighter green tint, because we just didn’t want to have to deal with fogging again.

We arrived on a Tuesday and took advantage of their 50 amp power hook-ups for our stay. We had the option of staying in the rig while the work was being done over the next 2 days, or getting a room. They have a pretty comfortable waiting area, with couches to stretch out on if necessary. Free coffee, wifi, tv, etc. We opted for a cheap room so we didn’t have to be up and out by 8 each morning. The only real hitch we encountered was getting a call the first day where they explained that because the windows were taller than they expected, they had to cut them from larger sheets - which cost and extra $100 each. Of course they apologized profusely, but there was no going back at this point. even at an extra $400, I still feel it was a good price.

The work went smoothly after that and we returned Thursday afternoon to pay and pick up the rig. The result is terrific, but there were two slight problems. First, I was warned about tearing of the paint around the edges of the windows. Lazy Daze apparently installs the windows first, Caulks around them, then paints right up over the byutle caulk. when they remove the windows, it can tear off some of the paint on the edges as well. Fortunately this only happened in one small portion at the top of 1 window. Easily repaired with touch-up paint.

The other problem was that they re-applied one of the pull bars too low and it sits right on the slider. When I open it, it rubs against the metal, causing it to bind. It will eventually wear down and slide more easily. The others slide way more easily than they did. I didn’t discover this till a few days later when I tried to open it. They required that I not attempt to open the windows for at least 24 hours to let the adhesive set. This would be covered in their guarantee, but it’s not a big enough issue to want to return of 100 miles.

The real shock came as we were ready to settle up. She started ringing up charges that didn’t match our estimate to the tune of +400! At this point, I pulled out the original estimate and said excuse me? They had estimated wrong, but to their credit, didn’t squabble about it and waived it. So between the extra cost for the bigger glass and the incorrect estimate, we were still pleased with the final price.

I would still recommend them for getting this work done. Just be sure you are clear on everything and keep records. We are happy with the far more light that is coming in, a little dubious about lost privacy, and curious to see how the lack of double pane will affect our comfort. I think the differences between the original glass and the new when looking at the rig are probably only really noticeable to owners. We can always get them tinted in the future.

My thanks as well. Too bad about the green tint, which I personally don’t care for. Sure wish they would adopt a neutral gray like in many sunglasses or aftermarket film tints for car windows. I had my car windows tinted 6 years ago and they’ve held up beautifully. Did RV glass offer a clear window for later tinting?  — Jon

Hi Jon,
i seem to recall they did offer a clear alternative, but that really didn't appeal to us. My tech said he thought the company should at least offer an on site window tinting service. I agree. I also didn't realize window tinting means applying tint sheets instead of actually tinting the glass. I'm actually liking the improved lightness in the rig. Might just keep it this way. Of course I'm in the Pacific Northwest, might be a really different situation in the desert southwest.

This was a good post, we are in the process of trying to figure out which is the best route on our 2003 in regard to the window fogging.  Thanks.

Good luck with your "figuring it out". I seem to remember a post that RV Glass Solutions stopped working on Lazy Dazes or perhaps Class C's in general. I hope I am wrong. When you figure it out, please share your plan. Many are in the same foggy state...

There are some challenges I see with repairing foggy windows.   First, finding a reliable vendor willing to work on a LD.  Secondly, hope that the installation doesn’t cause any paint or body damage, which has sometimes been reported.  Next, the process is somewhat expensive without knowing how long the repair will last.   By some accounts, the repaired window became foggy within a few years.  At the least, it’s a difficult repair decision.

For now, we’ve decided to live with our one (1) foggy window.

I've had some experience on fixing clouded windows. I did seven on our last rig. Came out great. I didn't, however, have to deal with the paint-after-window-install issue of our LDs. Anyhow, you can buy an 4 window do it yourself kit from Dave Root in Oregon for $320 (several years ago) which includes everything you need. The process is:

1. Remove window frame;
2. Split frame;
3. Remove glass;
4. Separate double panes;
5. Remove old seal;
6. Install new seal;
7. Reassemble & reinstall.

It's quite a job but lots of fun!

Hi JOR;  I'm suitably amazed at the repairs you've been doing!  I'm used to the downside of not having dual thermal pane windows.  The double standard thickness of my tinted windows will have to suffice for me. I really don't notice how loud or quieter the windows could be. I also don't think the amount of added thermal insulation is really significant. I do try to avoid the very high, or very low temperature climes.

Thanks, Ron! The window job was a pandemic project. Recommendation to anyone who wants to do their windows: Do them one at a time; don't take them all out first!  :D  :D

I'm with you on the single vs. double pane. I've had both. I think that RVs are so poorly insulated that the double pane is not a big improvement.

Interested in learning more about this, we have three badly fogged windows.  Dave Root appears to be gone when searching for his site.

I saw more than one way to seal the windows on YouTube, do you have any preferences?  None of the videos I watch show exactly how to reseal the windows and one method actually drills holes in the window and supposedly washes the dirt out.

Having owned two LDs, one with single-pane windows and one with dual-pane windows, the only noticeable difference was a sound reduction. With aluminum frames, heat and cold still pass through

Larry,
This looks like a good link to Dave's site: daveroot I see he has a review that's only a year old so maybe he's still around.

When I was researching for my project I couldn't find much but now I see several sources for repair kits on eBay and Amazon as well as other sites. The prices look attractive too.

I wrote up a step by step tutorial for my SOB group which I'm attaching. Bear in mind it's directed at Foretravel owners and Creation windows but the process should be about the same for our LD windows too.

By the way, Just read your reseal writeup in the Companion. Good clear instruction by you and the others. I find the Companion to be very helpful. Glad we have it available.

None of the tools in the "kits" are unique, I would prefer to buy the spacer seal in bulk, having three large windows that are fogged.

It's a future project, right now the LD is on jack stands having a complete brake system rebuild including the replacement of the 20-year-old brake hoses and all the wheel bearings. It's amazing how large and heavy the rotors are, they get heavier each time the brakes are worked on.

Which one of the double pane windows has the tinting or both?  What if the window pane unit were removed and the inner pane was removed and the unit was put back in as a single pane unit?  Our 98~MB is that way, in fact all the RVs we have owned had single pane windows, it's an adjustment but they don't fog?

I'm thinking they do help quite a bit with sound insulation, though.

Hi Liam, and Greg;   Just seven months ago up in the same 'neck of the woods' as you Liam.  Greg P replaced his whole window with dual pane.  His '97 'TK had the same single pane but 'double thick' three piece window from LD that I have.  The E350 chassis for both his '97 and my '99 would have shorter windows.   "I ordered from motionwindows.com/ and picked it up.  Ordered  a 84 5/8 x 25 7/8 Series 1800 window that is much thicker than the factory and the same quality tint."  Craig stated that the window cost less than $1k.  His pictures certainly look nice!  Hard way to fix a Rear Window Leak     Answer to Larry back then: (reply #6)  "got the dark grey and it is very close to the factory tint"

    On our first inaugural trip in 2000, we were in a rainstorm in Utah, and ended up with a water leak in the same place that Craig had in his window. One of the screws holding the joint (stile) between the driver side small window and the larger middle window hadn't been tightened all the way.  I fixed that then.  If I need to replace that window, I'd go dual pane also.

Having owned LDs with single and dual-pane windows, the biggest noticeable difference is in sound suppression,
not so much for heat or cold insulation, the aluminum window frames transfer heat quite well.
At this point in time, I wish our LD had single panes.

Our 98~MB has single pane windows, we have not experienced the benefits of the dual pane window.?  Our little problem now is a crack in our Right Rear lounge window stationary forward glass which started at about 12" long but now runs the whole pane.  This started in 2018, but when we decided to replace it the tint for the glass was not available to the manufacturer due to supply chain issues created by Covid 19.  I have not called them recently but my expectations are that it is no longer available?  While the shade is down it looks Great!  But when the shade goes up Karen says "what are we going to do about that!"  I guess I will make another call to NOGO Glass?

At some point I plan to make the side windows match the rear as the screen clips fail and can't be purchased.  Another expensive way to fix something small.  Also at some point @KAREN & LIAM we need to get together again  :)
