Onan replacement parts
Hello LD Guru's

I am in need of some assistance. I have a 2000 26.5 RB. It has the Onan Emerald plus BGE series generator. I am the 4th owner and the generator only had 144 hours on it when purchased. Not enough maintenance or runtime.
Fast forward to now and I am getting it up to speed. Originally it wouldn't run without holding start button. I determined it was the fuel system issues. Not knowing if it even ran or produced power, I elected to replace carb, fuel pump and filter with cheap knockoff to confirm unit even worked. It did perform and generated power to run rig and a/c. for a short time anyhow. Then it started idling very rough and surging. Based on previous post, I hooked up new gas supply can with new gas and seafoam. Started generator and it would run great for 5 seconds and then start surging. Ran it for 1.5 hours over a gallon of fuel and no changes. I checked power panel inside rig (Prosine 2000). It shows voltage all over place from 111 to 129, HZ from 57 to 69. so of course, the controller will not allow power in because it's too wild. I had also replaced the voltage regulator from Flight Systems.

Based on the above I believe next step is to replace carb with a real Onan carb. However, after looking online, I found only 1 place to get a real Onan carb. It was $916.00.

This is where I need some guidance?

Based on the above, is it prudent to replace carb at this point?
Should I replace fuel pump and filter as well?
If so, are there any places anyone would recommend ordering from? $(900) is STEEP!

PS. 3rd owner dropped fuel tank in 2019 and replaced tank fuel pump. He did not confirm he changed small hose for genie at that time. But based on gas can run test, it didn't make a difference.

Thanks in advance to everyone on this site who shares their love of rving and the trial and tribulations that go with rving and living the LD life.

It's been a few decades since working on Emerald gen-sets but I remember it was possible to adjust the mixture, a cause of surging. The adjustment screw may be covered with a cap, I don't remember.
Since it ran OK for a few minutes, the carb may have pulled in a chunk of crud and blocked a jet. This can happen on fuel systems that sit for long periods.

The later Microquiet's mixture can be adjusted by prying off the altitude adjustment knob and tuning for best performance when hot and under heavy load.

Keep us posted.

George,

I have the complete service manual for the BGE/NHE genset that I bought many years ago.  Subsequently I have found it on US Archives that maybe you can download.

Page 6-3 ....  "Engine Hunts and Surges"   Cause and Corrective actions
Page 6-17...  "Fuel System Gasoline"  with adjustments on 6-19 but I would read the entire section.  They what you to adjust these with a load and a voltage and frequency meter and assumed good working carb.  There is a section on tear down if you want to look at debris.  Do you have your original carb?

Larry and Ramon,

Thanks for the quick response and manuals. I will review and then jump in. Luckily, I did keep original carb. If it turns out I need a new carb, do you know of any sites to get one? I am supposed to be leaving on an extended trip this Saturday. Would be nice to have Gennie to run AC when needed out boondocking.

I guess this is how part time rving goes, always something to keep us busy!

If you can check your orignal carb but seems this is the P/N for a 4k BGE generator 146-0455.  Direct from cummins is about $470 which is still a lot but if indeed the carb itself and no other problem and if you plan to keep the rig, then maybe worth  it to have A/C.

Seems to be plenty of cheap carbs out there.   Do you run it every month or there abouts?  I know ours would have a hard time starting and ran rough until warmed up if it sat for a few months.  I would imagine its just like the Honda portalbe gens or any others......  If you don't run it regualry or drain the carb bowl, the jets get gummed up by the ethanol gas.

Oh and one more thing, yes, replace fuel filter and I used to unplug the fuel pump and let it run out of gas when we would store the rig.  Before starting it later, I would touch the connector of the fuel pump wire to the power from battery to run the pump until the bowl filled up, then I would connect it correctly and start it up.  This worked  for the better part of 10 years before we got rid of the rig.  Towards the end, I think it needed new plug wires.

Maybe try Yakima Generator for OEM parts. Home - Yakima Generator

I just bought a bought a fuel pump for my 4KY K series (A064S966) for $205 vs the $277 shown on Tweety's. Worth a try if you decide on OEM parts.

A lot of money for a fuel pump for sure.

Good luck,
Ron

Adding a fuel shut off on the gas line prior to entering the fuel filter/pump is a much better solution. I shut off the gas line and let the gen run until it’s starved of fuel and the carb bowl is therefore empty

My local NAPA had access to electric fuel pumps for Onan Generators.

I also just bought a fuel pump, same as Ron's (A064S966) directly from the Cummins website, for $208 with free shipping, arrived in 3 days.  Hopefully it does the trick when it's installed!

I thought about this on ours but then I wasn't sure if I wanted the electric pump running dry. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks for all of the info. I will have to put this off for a bit. Walked out this morning to big red puddle underneath transmission.

I would add a switch to shut the fuel pump’s power to run the carb dry.
The pump’s seals are designed to stay wet all the time, I wouldn’t want to run it dry.

So sorry for taking so long to update my problems.

Turns out transmission pan bolts were over torqued and bent the pan. Replaced gasket and ordered new pan. Will change now that we are back.

As for Gennie, turns out it was governor adjustment. When I replaced carb, I had disconnected the throttle linkage. I thought I had it back in original spot but was mistaken. Just finished 9-week road trip and ran Gennie for approximately 30+ hours, she ran like a dream once I followed steps above to adjust.

Thanks everyone.
