Defective ShureFlo 4008 new right out of the box
Thought I was going crazy with this repair.

Current ShureFlo 4008 was manufactured in 2014 and was starting to sputter and be inconsistent with pressure. Decided it was time for a replacement and after everyone’s recommendations went with another 4008.
First time doing this job but it’s straightforward so what could go wrong?

Well everything it felt like at the time. Got the old one out, didn’t think about fully draining the system and got water everywhere (rookie move). Bolted and wired up the new one finally and fired it up…

Great pressure on all the lines but the dang thing wouldn’t shut off and pressurize. I checked everything and thought maybe there was an air leak but no everything was snug. If I switched the pump on it just ran and ran.  Called customer service and they advised me to adjust the pressure adjustment screw with a hex wrench. Tweaked and tweaked per their 1/4 turn guidance to no avail. Disconnected and tried to reconnect to my old pump just to see if it would pressurize. Somehow stripped the plastic thread on the old pump and leaking water everywhere even though I now had drained the system. Yelling at my wife for assistance and soaking multiple towels and filling containers of water. How the heck could I have gone so wrong??!?

Then I remembered the previous owner had a spare in the drawer. Decided what the heck and hooked it up. Dated from 2015 but the dang thing worked PERFECTLY! Pressurized in seconds after I had refilled the tank.

I wasn’t crazy. I just had a defective ShureFlo 2008 Manufactued in 2022. I am hoping it was just a fluke and not a sign of poor quality.

I need to go for a bike ride and lower my stress levels  >:(

Hi Joe;  I don't see any wires going to the pressure switch.  Those switch terminals are at the end away from the motor (bottom in this picture) where the actual pump is.  In some installations the pressure switch is located elsewhere in the plumbing. In LD's I've only seen the pressure switch as a part of the pump itself.    A picture:  Amazon.com: SHURFLO 4008-101-A65 New 3.0 GPM RV Water Pump Revolution, 12V :...   Except for some vendors, priced about $64-$74 range.     RonB

There’s a red wire that goes from the motor to a connector on the front of the pump and then the red and black wire for hook up to 12v. My old one just had red to red and black to white hooked up. I did the same for the new pump.

Good.  The white wire in housing is the neutral, almost a ground.  I see more 12v dc items coming now with a red, white  color pair.  Less confusing than red/black or black/white pairs.   I realize with a new pump that you don't want to do much troubleshooting, but I would test the switch to see if it ever opened with high pressure. I hope the new pump works correctly. About two years ago I replaced my old 21 year old pump with the one you bought, and it worked great out of the box.  I could have driven 50 miles away (Oceanside) to get it, but ordered through Amazon. Shipped from some warehouse to Georgia, then Florida, then to San Diego. Took about 1 1/2 weeks!  Good thing I wasn't in a hurry.  RonB

FWIW! I learned about the 'pressure adjustment (hex) screw from an early post on this board. what it did not tell me was the tiny increment of adjustment necessary to accomplish the proper setting, far less than a ¼ turn. Failing the test I finally had to ask Vince to do it for me. Even he squinched up his face at the thought but managed to getter done.   ;D

Not sure how I would have tested the switch and ended up getting a replacement from Amazon Prime. It will now act as my spare as I put in the current “spare” from 2015 which was still new in the box. Pressurized properly right away. My new replacement has the same manufacturing day of 6/22/22 so I’m hoping I just had a fluke and it’s not a bad batch of 4008 pumps.
Fortunately Amazon shipped it to me with “free” one day shipping included in my Prime membership.

I’m glad I wasn’t crazy because it’s a pretty straightforward job. Thanks for the replies! Let me know how you test the pressure switch!

Hi Joe;  You should test the new pump now in case it is also 'bad out of the box'.  Especially if it was built the same day as the one that didn't work.  To test it:  put the leads of a digital multi meter (DMM) across the switch leads. When the pump isn't running, (open switch) you should have 12 volts displayed on the meter.  When running, the switch will be closed and no volts will be displayed on the meter. (Yes the pump switch needs to be on).
With pump turned on but not running, there should be 12 volts displayed. Open a faucet and the meter should change to zero. Close the faucet and the line should pump up to the pressure needed to open the switch. A so called 'on demand' situation.   RonB
