Can’t Access Forums
Has anyone other than me had problems this past week accessing the Technical and/or the General Info forums from the home page?  I’m using an iPad, just like I’ve been doing for years. However, when I click to open either of these two forums, I get a grey page with a couple of tiny boxes. Tapping anywhere on the pages gets nothing. An example is attached. The other forums’ buttons work just fine. I get the list of unread posts and click on each to read. So, what’s happening with the Tech and General?  Thx, Jon

Hi, Well nothing has changed at the Forum (that I know of), but I had a windows update two days ago, and since then, I've had my laptop lock up 3 times in the last two days requiring me to exit, and re-enter.  Not just the Forum. It has never happened before.  Other than that, I can't help from here.  No Apple devices here.   Just ancient Windows, or Android stuff.   RonB

I'm on my MacBook Air now but I tried it on my iPad and Technical was ok but General showed up blank like your pic.  I did a little experiment and found that taping on any of the page-number blocks (i.e. [1] [2] [3] etc.) in the grey area brought up the full page contents.  From there I could click another page-number block to navigate further.  However if I used the Safari Back button, it would take me back eventually to the blank grey page.  Weird... I'm assuming it has something to do with the way iPad's Safari browser does page cache.

Update: For probably over a year now I've had trouble logging on with my iPad but not the MacBook or Windows laptop.  About 50% of the time when I first login using the iPad, that is to say the first time of the day, it fails.  It appears that I've typed the wrong password.  It doesn't matter how deliberate I am typing my password, making sure I don't make a mistake, it will fail anyway.  Going back and trying again will always log me in.  This only happens the first time of the day and only on the iPad.  Subsequent logins are always successful.  So.. I've compensated by not typing any password on the first attempt of the day and just let it fail, then hit the back button and use my correct password... bingo, I'm logged in.  Just an oddity of owning an Apple ;)

Hey John,

I exclusively use an iPad to read the forums for years, with Safari.   No issues.

Suspect there is something configured differently with your Safari, like extensions, or maybe one of the experimental features was enabled.

Try going to Settings > Safari > Advanced > Experimental features > Reset to defaults

Do you have any other browsers installed like Chrome?

Hi Dave,

My iPad is a 6th generation so it’s about 5 years old and I’m running the latest iOS 16.4.1.  I looked at Safari experimental features and there were a lot of them, some turned on and some turned off.  I don’t believe I’ve ever enabled/disabled any of them but I did a reset to defaults to make sure.  Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll have to see if it makes any difference.

Thanks for the tips. I did reset Safari back to defaults, then rebooted, then opened the forum. No joy. Technical and General open to the gray pages with the tiny numbered boxes. Clicking on the tiny box labeled “1” took me to the beginning of a thread from three weeks back. Not helpful to say the least. Again, the other forum categories open just fine just like always. Baffled. — Jon

I just discovered a workaround on my iPad: rotate the display 90 degrees, and then back. Happiness!

Keith, I just saw your post and immediately tried the rotation ploy. Sigh. No joy. Still can’t understand why it only happens on the technical and general forums but not the others, which all work fine. ☹️  — Jon

Hello Jon & Loni.  We have an iPad that is updated with the current iOS.  In order to try to help you or at least give you feedback, I tried to open those pages you mentioned above with our iPad.  I experienced the exact same issue.  So it’s clearly not something you’re doing.  I’m going to try to find a solution and I’ll follow up with any results.

A quick follow up.   I experienced the same issue with the iPad Edge browser, Firefox and Safari so the issue is not related to a browser setting.   I disabled our Ad Blocker and some other security features which did not resolve the problem.

It’s not an issue with our computer using Edge or Firefox with strong security features.  It’s not an issue with Safari on my iPhone 13.   My conclusion is it’s an inherent problem with iPad’s recent iOS.  I wish I could help more.

Thanks, Ed. I think you’re right that it’s an iOS update glitch. I’m having some new problems with my iPhone 13pro where it will not open some web pages from a link embedded in a text message or email. Very maddening. I googled that issue and found others complaining of the same thing, but no fixes. All Apple help says is to make sure you’re on the latest version and to reboot. No help at all, and it seems they’re stonewalling that an OS problem exists. I used to despise Microsoft, but Apple seems to be no better these days. — Jon

Can’t buy into the latest iOS being the culprit, both my iPad and iPhone are kept up to date, both currently at 16.5

No problems encountered.

Is there a specific link someone can post that reproduces the issue?   Would be helpful for debugging (yes my former life bleeding in here)

The “link” is just clicking on the Technical Folder of the Forum on iPad. It first showed up for me on my iPad after the 16.4.1(a) update - I never experienced it previously. It doesn’t occur on iPhone or Mac.

Yes, Dave. On my iPad, when I clicked on the link in your post I got the gray page with the little numbered boxes. Nothing else. — Jon

That's odd...  I still have the problem when clicking on LAZY DAZE FORUMS / Lazy Daze General Info & Discussions but not when clicking on LAZY DAZE FORUMS / Lazy Daze Technical or when clicking on Dave's link.  Dave's link is for Technical so that's why I don't see the problem with his link.  I’m using Safari on my gen 6 iPad with IOS 16.5 installed.

What happens when you use the "New Posts" button rather than trying to access the individual forums?  Do the Technical and General posts show up?

Our workaround for both the technical and general forums is to use the “recent topics” buttons from the home page. But that’s a slow process. Again, the other forums work just fine. Weird. This is a problem only on the iPad, not on my iPhone, so it’s gotta be some iPad update issue?  — Jon

Update!  Problem resolved itself. Without any action on our part, the forum tech and general messages started working just fine. I know there has been a recent iOS update, so maybe that was the cure. Is the problem solved for you others that had similar difficulties?  Hope so. — Jon&Loni
