Re: Adios Microwave Reply #1 – April 30, 2023, 10:23:43 am As using the microwave always required hookups or starting the generator, and dry camping has been our usual style, we got out of the habit of using the nuker as other than a breadbox. At home, though, we use it a lot for a quick warmup of something or other, and the occasional microwavable food item. So once circumstance allowed installing a 2200W inverter, we ended up using the microwave as intended, and a few seconds to a few minutes run is easily and quickly recoverable with solar to the LFP batteries. It remains, however, still our breadbox too...Steve

Re: Adios Microwave Reply #3 – April 30, 2023, 01:01:41 pm Like Steve, our LD's "bread box" can also be used to heat things up with the inverter.Our previous 1983 LD had the microwave removed since it lacked a generator and the fact that 20+ years ago lithium batteries did not exist and inverters cost big bucks.So much has changed.When we ordered our 2003 LD, I asked Steve if he could provide a custom door that would fit the microwave cabinet and the answer was no. We rebuilt the doors from the bathroom to fit the hole created by the gone Mwave andadditional cabinet where the pad was. Then we built new style doors for the bathroom. We're leaving in a couple of days so we'll get a chance to see how it goes. Might end up putting some kind of door on it one of these days but a person can never have too many white boards so it's likely to stay.jor 3 Likes

Never cooked with a convection micro but assume it would be easier for us to quickly cook some chicken nuggets etc. for the kiddos without adding a bunch of heat to the coach. I have been using one in my house kitchen for years and outside of some minor clearance restrictions serves quite well with very little exterior heating problems. Not sure. All microwaves vent out heat - in the case of RV-specific models, heat that goes into the cavity behind the unit vents out the front through the mounting baffles. Convection models probably will utilize this method as well. Since the convection mode utilizes a heating element and not microwaves, it won't lessen your heat load any more than a toaster oven or the oven below your stove, and the interior room is less than in a pure microwave of similar dimensions.Steve 1 Likes

No external venting--just those vents to the rig's interior.

Since they run longer, as would be expected, when in convention-baking mode, I'd need to find a way to externally vent if I wanted to avoid heating the coach like an oven would. Or go simpler, and just carry a toaster oven if we didn't want to fuss with the lighting the gas oven.

Don't turn the oven knob to 'Off' just return it to 'pilot'. It uses very little gas in idle. Moving a toaster oven around is a lot more work. RonB

I know it is supposed shut off if the flame goes out, but I have at least one report that the pilot can be lit without pushing in the knob - maybe a fluke, but in our '83 we on occasion would smell propane faintly when left in pilot-only.I installed an electronic ignitor for all burners, including one tip I mounted by the oven pilot. Simply hold down the ignitor button until we see the reflection of the flame on the bottom of the oven, then it is ready to go.Steve 2 Likes

Lifting the burner grate plate, there is a screw on the oven control, and the amount of gas for the pilot itself can be adjusted to a very low level. It's warm, so flows out the ceiling. If it goes out, you've got a good nose! Mine has never gone out, but now with the microwave/LiF, the oven stores cat food. RonB

Ron, this is then likely why we would notice the smell when we left it on 'pilot-only in our '83. In our '04, you must push in on the knob to get the pilot to light, so they must have made a change. In an '03 I know the pilot gas would flow without pushing, so perhaps this is when it changed.Steve
