Winter Weather in SoCal Mountains
For anyone planning on traveling through the Grapevine or Tehachapi passes, it will be dicey to impossible starting tonight for the next several days. We are buckling down here in the mountain communities. Safe travels, all.

Stay warm.
The snow level is supposed to be very low for the upcoming storm, down to 1500' or less in the LA area.
This winter feels like the winters we had 20+ years ago with real rain and colder temps...I like it.

Just returned home from the snow and subfreezing temps in Chicago, sounds like I’ll skip more of the same in SoCal.

The first storm has come through without too much trouble.  There was a partial closure of the 58 pass through Tehachapi.  The next storms, starting tonight, look to be more formidable.

Hey Greg, If you can find a way out of there, just slip on over here to sunny Florida and enjoy springtime here at our ranch's campsite. The air is heavy with the fragrance of orange blossoms. New leaves are on the trees in the woods. One of our bulls came up to me to say hi yesterday. He likes to be scratched on his nose. It will be in the mid 80's all this and the next week. You are always welcome.

Thanks for the invite, Mike.  Hopefully we can take you and Elizabeth up on it one of these days.  No time soon, though  . . . (after last night's storm).

Measured 19” of snow from our storm. Anyone know what the snowload rating of a LD is?

Hi Greg; According to Amazon, 20# per cubic foot. 8.8' x 27' x 19" is about 363 cubic feet or 7260 pounds. A little less than 4 tons. (3.6 tons). More if it wet snow, and ice is extra. It's a static load, but still quite a lot of weight.  I think RimRider posted a picture of his AZ mountain lot, and had a slanted metal roof over his motorhome.  Liam and Karen would have a better idea of what loading is permissible. I think I'd be up there with a shovel to get some of that off.  If it is sunny, some carbon black, or salt?   Maybe something like this?  RV Shelter Peak Style Canopy - RV Must Haves!                  RonB

19" of snow is a lot of weight, and with more snow on its way,  you might consider removing some or all of it.

Sorry about you having to cancel on MB, maybe next will work out better.

Greg, Take care around the roof hatches, when the snow melts it may work it's way in those hatches and leak inside.  When we snow camp with our 98~MB, we now leave the roof hatches slightly open so the escaping warm air melts the snow back a few inches form the hatches.  In the past when we left the hatches tightly closed while snow camping we had some leaking.  If you have no heating in your LD the snow may build up against the hatches and leak?  We have had as much as 15" of snow while we have been snow camping but I usually climb up on the roof to clear it before that much snow accumulates.  Otherwise our LD is stored indoor while we are not using it.

Thanks for the tips.  I intended to take care of some of the snow yesterday but we were shoveling the driveway until late afternoon when it started snowing again.  It's on today's agenda.  I do have the RV parked on a slight incline but maybe I need to increase the angle?   ???

Hi Greg

Have you inquired about renting a snow blower or hiring a Team (with plow and shovels), to remove your snow (from the ground of course)?

Hi, Warren. If I were smart, I would probably do that but then, how else would I get my winter exercise, ha ha?  I was planning on going out today and do some shoveling but blizzard conditions persist at the moment so will hold off until later.

Granted it's cold, but according to the NWS,  winds must be at least 35mph to qualify as 'blizzard' - you were at 15 at the time of the photo.

Well Joel, it certainly felt like a blizzard yesterday when we were out shoveling!  ;)  Made it to the RV and the batteries are hanging in there so far. If I can’t get the solar panel uncovered in the next day or two, I’ll start the engine to charge.

Understand.  I didn't know till this last week about the minimum wind component for blizzard.
Our local weather person said cheerily, "I know it feels like a blizzard at So. Lake Tahoe, but with winds at 20, it's too low for a blizzard - it's just a whiteout".
But as Yvon Chouinard said of rock climbing falls, "anything more than 50 feet is academic".

Okay, here's my 2¢ donation. And when it's being built make sure you include a transparent or translucent section just over your solar panel/s, of which you should have at least two!   :D   :D
