E-Bikes
I am interested in buying an E-Bike. Would anyone like to share their experience with them? Good, bad or just thoughts? Brands? Folding or not? Size of motor?

Hey Dale,
A good place to start might be to think about how you are most likely to use your bike. Will you be mostly on road, on trail, off road or some of all? Are you going to be a distance or short hop rider? How would you like to transport? How much lifting can you manage? What is your price range? Your personal answers to questions like these may help direct your search since the market is now very large and option rich.

Personally,  I wanted the ebike to be transportable in my tow vehicle , have adequate front fork travel and fat tires for occasional trail and beach riding and beefier torque to easily climb hilly terrain in local areas that I often frequent when dry camping. (Battery range was not a significant issue for me because I can only travel 20-25 miles before my back and neck have had it regardless of what I am riding on:)

I chose an Espin Nesta a year or so ago based on my own set of price and performance specs and have been pleased with both performance and reliability to date. It is definitely not the lightest ebike in its range but I do believe beefier components will contribute to longer term reliability.

Happy trails and best of luck with your search.

I agree with Matt, determine what you need your e-bike to do and shop from there.   Do test ride what ever you want to buy, was love at first ride for what I ended up buying.

I bought a Cannondale Tesoro Neo X 3 last year.

My criteria was I wanted a bike first, with pedal assist on the electric size, and to that end, a mid drive motor, which works for a lower center of gravity, and pedals better.  No throttle on mine, you must pedal all the time.   Could not be happier with my purchase.

I’ve been looking at the Lectric XP 2.0. The only drawback I see is that is an online company. Their support system on line seems good but they don’t have dealerships. Has anyone had any experience with Lectron. They’re plant is near Phoenix.

We own two Lectric bikes. We have the 2.0 that weighs about 65 lbs and the Lectric Lite that weighs 40 lbs. Our bike rack fits great on the back of our LD.  We like and use the bikes a lot, especially when out with our LD. They are well made and fit us well. I use the Lite because I need the lighter bike and it fits me better.  If you have more specific questions, email me.

We have a Rad Power  RadRunner Plus and a RadWagon.  Both bikes can have both a rider and passenger.  Love them so far, but hard to change rear tire since it is a hub motor - so invested in Tannus Armour Tire Inserts for both and no more popped tires since!
We have a Hollywood e-bike rack, great rack -  but I think I'd consider an e-bike rack with a ramp now since they are so heavy.

As for bike rack we went with 1-up superduty with ramp. It was pricey, but with load rating and rv approved think it was ok.

We had 2 of them.  Way too heavy.  Happy day when sold!  But they do have good support.

This brings up an issue many e-bike buyers do not consider, how heavy e-bikes can be, especially the wide tire versions.
Regular bike racks are not up to carrying a pair of heavier e-bikes, heavy-duty racks are needed for these bikes.
A question to ask yourself is, can I pick up this bike and place it on the rack?
Folding bikes are popular but, once again, they weigh a lot and are difficult to put inside a rig or in the truck of a tow vehicle.

Many e-bikes are bigger and longer than bicycles and block the taillights, an invitation to have a roadside visit with the local highway patrol. On our bike racks, I add a second set of taillights using the 4-prong Factory trailer plug for power.

I had an e-bike at one time, actually more of a scooter than a bike, called eGo!

I liked the fact that most of the weight, and there was plenty of it, was down low to the ground providing balance 2nd to none. But that same weight prevented any thought of lifting it onto a carrier. I managed however with a carrier that had a ramp that allowed me to load it using its own power.

My Lite Lectric is only 40lbs. That’s lighter than most.

You make good points about ebikes. We chose our Lectric bikes with all of this in mind. Even though our bikes fold, we travel with them on a rear rack. Our Lectric bikes don’t extend beyond the width of the LD. The bike rack we have is rated for 120 lbs, it’s sufficient without being what I consider heavy duty and it does the job carrying two fat tire ebikes no problem. The Lectric Lite model is just 40 Lbs so most people should be able to pick it up. I’m not endorsing Lectric, Im just saying options are available that meet the criteria but it may take some attention to measurements, details and research.
