Toilet Water Leak - Sigh
First allow me to say that we spent several days performing semiannual maintenance and prepping for a 4 week trip to Arkansas.   I felt we did everything humanly possible to get ready.

Just two (2) miles from home and one (1) of the 10 devices in our LD made a loud beeping sound.   I’m driving in heavy traffic and in a construction zone with an unknown device loudly beeping.   Margee started checking all the devices and quickly discovered the beeping water detector behind the toilet.
Dang, Dang Dang

I said to Margee make sure the water pump is off.  And let’s NOT return home.   We have all the parts to rebuild the toilet and we’ll just fix it on the road.   I asked Margee to clean up the water and place a towel behind the toilet.

A few minutes later she said she thinks she knows what’s the problem.   The container for the toilet brush had fallen onto the water detector and it contained a tiny bit of water which set off the alarm.

The strange and even wacky things that can happen in an RV never ceases to amaze us.   Just plain goofy.

Ed, glad it was a "false alarm".  Enjoy your trip.  We were in NW Arkansas last October.

Velcro on the bottom of the toilet brush container and the floor prevents that.  ;)

Whew!

So what kind and how do you keep a water detector in place while traveling?

We have two (2) detectors…Zircon Leak Alert Water Leak Detector & Flood Sensor Alarm/Water Leak Sensor with Dual Leak Alarms 90Db Audio/Battery Powered from Amazon.

One goes behind the toilet and one next to the water pump.  I simply wedge them into the existing space.   Hope this helps.

Footnote:   Earlier someone had mentioned that these water detectors seemed to be very sensitive.  And in fact they are very sensitive.  In that deleted post, I said a wet finger or damp cloth will trigger the alarm.  That’s exactly what we want.  Our little episode shows the effectiveness of this alarm.

The water pump and toilet valve/vacuum breaker are the two most common sources of unseen leaks.
Leak detectors are cheaper than repairing a rotted floor..

Out of curiosity, do you use the water leak detectors in you home as well?

Can you take a picture of where you put the detector.  We also have a 27’ Mid Bath but there really does not look like there is room to put the detector.

I’ll take a picture and then post it once we have cell service.  Might be a day or so.

Edit:  The device mentioned above easily fits on the floor directly behind the toilet pedestal.

I've always assumed that a leak would cause the water pump to run periodically, and alert us to the problem. Is there some situation where that method won't work?

Hi Eric. If the leak is before the pump you won't know it. And if small enough it will just relieve pressure while the pump is off, say sitting in your driveway. You won't know about it it will just have to prime the pipes up a bit more at first.  The vacuum breaker just leaks the water leading to the flush wand back into the bowl, or onto the floor, and the pump isn't involved.  The little water sensors are small and can be feet away in a cabinet.   Instapark Water Leakage Detection Alarm and Sensor, Low Battery Alert Pack...   RonB

Good points, and I realized this morning that our TurboKool evaporative cooler uses a small amount of water continuously much like a leak!) while it's operating. That makes the pump run periodically, which would mask any running caused by a leak. I'll order the ones you referenced, as they seem very suitable.

Eric, did you installed the TurboCool on your LD?  We have the PlaCool from the factory on our 98~MB which has failed again.  I have a TurboCool which I removed from our old itaska before we sold it.  So i was planning on swapping them out when our LD is in our building this winter.  The PlaKool is located in the hallway right out side the bathroom in our 98~MB.  How did your installation go?  Any tricks or pit falls to avoid?  Does the interior fan flange cover the hole completely?  When I am finished with this project, our old PlaCool will be available to anyone on the forum who wants it, the pump failed is why it is not working.

As indicated in my signature, I have a 2005 Jayco 24SS (24' length), so I can't help with LD details, as the layout is quite different. I mounted it in the front vent, which is over the rear edge of the cabover bed. There was 12VDC power at the vent, which I used for the TurbKool. In that location, the TurboKool vents can be aimed back into the living area (daytime), or forward into the cabover (nighttime). The three speed switch was replaced with a variable speed controller, which is much better suited for providing high speeds during the day, and low speeds at night.

We have a Flume device attached to the water meter that measures and tracks water usage. If it detects water flow over a settable period, it will send an email or text if it detects a leak. The cost is mostly subsidized by our DWP in an effort to make consumers more aware of how much water they are actually using in day-to-day tasks. Flume's app shows water usage over time in graph form.

LADWP - Flume

I have leak detectors under LD's water pump and behind the toilet.
