Spare Tire , where do you store it?
Hi, I have 2016 Mid Bath LZ, and spare tire is stored at one side of compartment, which occupies a lot of space. Where do you place it? Any space under the RV? Or any suggestions?

That's its home. We have traveled for years and never needed that space. Maybe you have too much stuff?

We have a 2000 26.5 mid bath, our spare tire is stored in the passenger side rear most compartment. That's where it was stored when we bought the rig 4 months and 6,000 mile ago :)

The vast majority of people leave it where yours is.

Occasionally someone will leave it at home.  You’re taking a a chance, but many new RVs don’t come with a spare.

I’ve seen a couple of people put the spare in front of the rig by adding a front trailer hitch.  They say it worked for them, but it hasn’t been a widespread adaptation.

It’s probably easier to find a place to put whatever you are trying to store in the tire spot than it is to move the tire.  For example, we sometimes carry an inflatable paddle board that could fit nicely in that space.  It also rides nicely on the top bunk, or in the shower, on a rear hitch mounted carrier, in the toad, or between the couches in the rear.   The tire would be awkward in any of those locations.

Amen! After years of design modification you can bet that Lazy Daze found the very best place to put it. If you are not satisfied with the location of your spare tire you should see where it is located on my '04 30'IB! It's behind the faux tire cover, behind an intermediate compartment door and still further under the queen bed. It needs a gorilla with long and strong arms to pull it out.

I've attached a long flexible air hose to the valve stem so that I can maintain air pressure without moving the tire.  ::)  ::)  ::)

Hi Wendy;  That location for the spare tire is where Lazy Daze put it.  I have a friend who had a 2001 MB (26.5') and I modified the enclosure with an easily removed 1" x 4" piece of fir to keep the tire forward, and prevent things stored in the more accessible back storage from rolling around under and beside the tire..  I kept the tire in a black poly garbage bag to keep it easier to slide in and out of it's space.  Like Lazy Bones I attached a long flexible filler hose (about 18") to allow checking tire pressure without moving the tire.
The 2001 had enough room to put in a hoist between the frame rails and mount the tire snug up against the bottom of the rig, underneath, outside. I ran out of time so didn't do that.  The newer rigs, a 2018 I looked at, had been rearranged. The propane tank is back there now on the driver side. Other changes under there have obscured that area. I don't know whether the underneath of your 27' MidBath has those changes yet.  I was going to do that on my new 2023 MB...... RonB

Thank you everyone's reply. Store behind the faux tire cover could be my best option. Does anyone put in behind the faux tire cover? Can you send it a photo how to attach it the body of LZ?

Hi Wendy;  The tire cover is where most models store the tire.  The Midbath had a redesign in about 2000 to give the driver more room at the front. and the tire got moved into the location where yours is.  The outside tire cover was kept to preserve the 'look' but there isn't enough room in your version.
My 'TK has a 4" deep hole to accommodate the depth of the tire to be up flush with the back wall inside.  I also have cup holders in the back wall.   RonB

As Ron said, your midbath (like mine) doesn't have room for the tire inside the fake spare cover; otherwise, Lazy Daze would have put it there. Modifying the rig to make it fit there would be a major undertaking, requiring either major interior surgery or a completely new, much-enlarged tire cover.

I mounted my spare on a hitch mount in front of the rig, but that involves buying and installing a front receiver as well as a tire carrier, so you may not want to go to the trouble and expense.

The simplest way to deal with it is to leave it in its current location, but put it in a contractor bag, as Ron suggested, because otherwise it can be very difficult to wrestle out... and perhaps add a hose to allow checking pressure without removing the spare.

I tow a Jeep Liberty behind my 2003 MB. I store the spare on a rack on top of the Jeep.

I'm a full-timer and need/want all the storage space I can get. :)

Does the weight of the Jeep plus the weight of the spare LD tire exceed 4,000 lbs???

I upgraded my hitch to 6000 lbs. I'm traveling lighter than when I first started but the Jeep, tire and stuff are over 4,000 lbs. My last Smartweigh was 4750 lbs and I'm lighter than that now.

There is no way I could lift a spare for the LD or Jeep on top or off of our Wrangler by myself today, maybe twenty or thirty years ago. We have a crane arrangement to lift the Jeep's oversize spare on and off the tailgate holder. Big tires and wheels are heavy.

Back to the OP, a Mid-Bath spare tire should be carried where the Factory put it, there is no other suitable place.  Mid-Baths have lots of storage, maybe a good sorting out of gear is all that is needed.
We have lived with short LDs (22' & 23.5') for 27 years and carry everything we need plus a good collection of tools and parts, along with e-bikes, two 14' sea kayaks, and a Jeep toad. It all fits.

I have installed plastic sheets on the floor of the MB's's spare tire compartment that allows the spare to side easily.

I will not be moving or lifting tires on either of my vehicles. That's why I pay for AAA and Good Sam towing service (or whomever is available). :)

If you're not towing or using your rear hitch mount, why not buy a hitch mounted spare tire carrier and put it there.

I follow this thread along with others, but every time I see this dicussion I am even more glad I have an older midbath that actually stores the spare where it belongs, inside the tire cover in the back.  I've needed to use it more than once and it's a great place for it.

If you're not towing or using your rear hitch mount, why not buy a hitch mounted spare tire carrier and put it there.

You can, but it moves the weight way back in the coach, from right behind the axle to as far back as it can go.

That puts A LOT of force on the hitch, bouncing up and down.

It also prevents you from using the hitch for bikes or a tow vehicle.
