Garmin Power June 15, 2022, 02:45:58 pm I’ve been trying to figure out ways to clean up the power leads for all the gadgets that reside on my dash. I relocated the Garmin over to the passenger side corner so as to be compliant with California law. Previously it was in the middle of the windshield. That presented the problem of how to get power without having unsightly wiring draping down and on top of the dash. Inside the glove compartment there is a 12V power receptacle. To use it, you need to have the glove compartment lid open which is inconvenient. I was able to pop the receptacle out and remount it on the passenger side lower kickplate using a 1/2” pipe bracket. From there, I routed the Garmin power lead underneath the rubber door gasket along the edge of the plastic dash so as to be not very noticeable. 4 Likes

My old tired eyes couldn’t focus way over on the other side of the cab to view the map. Down under the rubber door seal edge, into the under dash area, where I added 12 VDC connectors, cigarette lighter sockets. The access panel just pulls off. (not easily) One for the Garmin, and double plug in for the TST and Scangauge. So Greg, that California law is for window mounted devices, and is particularly aimed at cell phones. Even cell phones running mapping/GPS routines. Not blocking your view is a good plan, but my GPS dashtop mount only blocks my view of the hood. The 3x5" GPS is in line with the view down the road. Because early in my ownership when I put in a different radio, the one Ford power point runs on the chassis battery, and the other one runs on my house batteries, along with the CB and radio. The keep alive memory power for the radio comes from the chassis battery. The power point from the chassis battery is on all of the time, but the Trik-L-Start keeps that from being a problem anyway. I never knew the older Fords didn’t have one. I wonder when they started putting them in??? I know the ‘48 Chevy I learned to drive on had one. It also had a starter button on the floor to get it going too 😊- John

The good news is, I didn't make any changes that aren't reversible. I wish I had the electrical skills that Ron and others on this forum have but since I don't, I try not to tap into any wires unless absolutely necessary. I really wanted to mount the Garmin on the driver side but I use the hood edge as a reference for position in the lane and the Garmin would block my view there, plus getting power on that side is more complicated. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

I’ve found the mic to be a perfect sight for the center of the lane. It helps a lot and is so small it’s almost invisible most of the time. Kent

Hook your cell to the radio via Bluetooth and answer calls using the mic.I’ve used it once with success. I’d have to read the radio manual to figure out how to use it again. There are less cumbersome hands free options for sure. The mic is pretty handy for my lane navigation. Not quite hands free though. Still gotta keep hold of the wheel.Kent 1 Likes
