Many states' parks systems have different fee structures for non-resident campers. Additionally, a state's park system may also add on park entry fees, "use" fees, "pass" fees, dump fees, pet fees, and other creative "fees" to basic campsite reservation charges. Oregon's state parks are some of the best in the country; if I can get a reservation, this California resident has no issues with Oregon state parks' fee structures.

We thoroughly enjoyed staying at a few different Oregon State Parks this past summer and hope to do so in the future.  For U.S. veterans with a service-connected disability, and active duty military on leave, the camping fee is waived/ reimbursed.  More info here:

Well worth it IMNSHO.
I seem to recall after the first one, Idaho passed a surcharge applicable to Oregon residents only.

We've camped in state parks in almost all of the lower 48 in our 18 seasons.  Oregon has some of the best we've encountered.  I am willing to pay more to maintain them.  Much better in almost any state park than being cheek to cheek in overpriced private parks!

Wonder how long before other states retaliate and charge out-of-staters a surcharge?
Any of the west coast states gets millions of visitors yearly, it appears to be a profit center worth exploiting.
I would expect this practice to spread and would like to see California adopt this, we have too many visitors.

IMHO if one state is gonna do it, they all should.  We get lots of visitors here in WA too, and we pay lots of taxes to the state parks, as well as surcharge on our RV licenses to support rest stop dump stations, etc.  HOWEVER, I would prefer if we could all just honor each other with reciprocal agreements, not just on state parks, but other things like fishing licenses.  Even if it were done on a state by state basis it would be good, like CA and OR, or WA and OR or maybe all 3?

Camping fees at New Mexico State Parks are the same for all visitors. However, their Annual Camping Pass which provides a discount on those fees is higher for campers from out-of-state. Thought that should be clarified.

Problem with this idea is taxing policy is different is each state.   For instance (yup this can be eye watering) one
State may collect all taxes and toss them into one big bucket and let the various groups fight of the remains.  Another State may have only user taxes ie if you use the government service you pay for it and nobody else.  Or a combination of all of the above.  Some States can borrow and spend others can only spent what they collect.   Some  States 'tell'  the residents what the State will collect  and while  others are constrain to only what the residents let them collect. In short there are 50 different tax collect and spending policies.    IMHO there is no one better then the other they just are.

Try Massachusetts - $17 for residents, $54 for out-of-staters at inland parks, $22 for residents, $70 for out-of=staters at ocean parks.
