Engine Battery Replacement 2016 TK
I recently purchased a 2016 Twin King with only 11,270 miles...garage kept but in need of new engine battery,  chassis batteries, tires and maintenance on most all systems. Low miles but for me i prefer to know everything is fresh. I travel solo and rather not take risks.
I drove the rig back home 725 mile in almost 13 hours....the engine battery cranked each time until it didnt....
I chose a Diehard Platnium 65-AGM...purchased from Advance Auto because they are nationwide....with a 3 year full replacement.
I read the manual....turned the house batteries off, took the solar fuse out, cut off the solar controller and proceded to check the battery with my meter.....still hot!!!!!
I scratched my head and then called Todd at Lazy Daze.....he put me on hold after i told him what i had done so far....after a bit he came back and said, go ahead and just replace the battery with 14.1 showing on my meter...yikes.
I looked closely at the tight fit of the battery, cables and ac pressure lines( with metal fittings right up close to battery cable ends)....
I took thinish cardboard and wrapped the ac metal fittings..wrapped and taped the battery posts....so far so good....
I unscrewed the one and only hold down bolt and block.....as soon as the bolt came loose i heard the nut (made into battery tray base) drop on to something metal and slide ....that should not have happened.
The battery tray is another genius idea by Ford....plastic tray with an embedded pot metal piece holding A square nut in the center....made to break away if it becomes rusted to the bolt....but if you "gorilla" the hold down screw too tight while tightening it down  it also breaks away..I removed the tray and used my magnetic telescoping tool...searched for an hour....gave up and went to Ford....they had one in stock....which usually means they sell alot of them....
On the original tray there was green  tape over the under side over where the nut was..my question...during build at factory..was this left by a technician at Lazy Daze.....assuming so....
I wrestled the heavy battery back into place being very careful not to knock loose the cable ends from where i had tucked them back. I found the insolator blanket that goes around the battery needs to go back on after you install the hold down bolt...ask me how i know this..lol.
I secured the bolt into the nut in the plastic tray....just snug enough so the battery did not move....will check after driving some. Slipped the blanket back around the battery case. I used the battery tool to rough up the posts and applied the grease to them after installing the red and black anti corrosion rings..donuts...i brushed the positive cable with the battery tool ...tighten it to the post then the negative....
Working with hot cables is a little nerve racking...Now i know most everyone here knows how to replace a battery.....BUT
I am curious if anyone has had this same issue...with no way to cut the power coming in from the solar panels.....

Where exactly did you pull the solar fuse from?  On my 2017 there is a solar fuse at the converter and another one under the dash on the driver's side.  Frankly, I don't which one does what but maybe someone will enlighten us!

PS: Good to hear you finally got another LD!

I pulled the one in the panel...with fuses and breakers....the manual did not mention another one??

Yes, I think I discovered it when I was fooling around under the dash.  Look to the left of the steering wheel after pulling off the lower dash section. There are some other fuses under there as well (see photos).

Hi FranRam;  If you have the SB3000i solar controller, it was providing a trickle charge to the chassis battery, direct from the solar PV panels. That is the only way you could get 14.1 Volts. That voltage can be turned off at the controller, using software.  Even pulling the fuse at the converter, that just stops solar charging from getting to the house batteries. The controller, with sunlight, may still have been operational. 12 volts isn't life threatening, although a low impedance battery can cause very large currents to flow.  First disconnect the grounded negative side, and keep the positive cable when removed away from grounded parts. I use that blue painters tape. Easy to remove and doesn't leave much residue.
Greg's under dash 10 A fuse may be on that trickle charge line from the controller.
Lazy Daze didn't leave that green tape there.  They have no reason to remove the OEM battery.  A 2016 may have had the battery changed sometime before you got it.  Check the date on that old battery.
I'm interested to know what could have been wrong with a 2016 engine with only 11k miles?  Didn't change the oil?      RonB

So am I; hope some clarification is forthcoming. But, if the rig had been sitting for long periods of time in between use - 11k over 5-6 years isn't much - and not maintained during the run and down times, some deterioration is not surprising.

“ need of new engine and chassis batteries”

I thought that too, why would you need a new engine in a five year old rig.   But reading the rest convinced me he was referring to the all the batteries in his rig, since there was no mention of a replacement engine.

I did not get a chance to look behind the knee bolster for the 10amp fuse....but it is on my list....for now the battery is in....i did wrap any metal with thin cardboard and tape...wrapped the cable ends in thick cloth and tape....
So on to the next items.
The 2016 TK was garage kept and just not being used....alot of items need attention....Tire sensor batteries....atomic clock outside batteries....generator maintenance,  very clean unit....just needs tlc and a place to go....lol
I started looking for a Lazy Daze over 15 years ago....the one i wanted would always be sold before i could get a plane ticket or it was 10k plus more than I had....my first one was a beauty...but too long for my parking pad...and i hated the midbath....my dream coach is a baby blue and with front dinette....that will be my 3rd one if i live long enough....found this one by accident....i am happy....just to have found it....never owned anything this new...still freaking me out...lol

Hi Fran; I just misread that, Yes the chassis battery needed replacing. (that is the engine battery, as opposed to the house battery pair)  Mine is about 8 years along and drops to 11.8 volts just sitting. A Diehard also, so I planned to get the same battery you got. It still starts the engine for a maintenance run.  By now I had planned to order a MidBath like Tedeboy did, to move up to a MB from my TK, but maybe that isn't going to happen. And you found my coach before I did, if I stay with the TK size.
I'm re-doing the battery box and electrical system, to hold two 200AH SOK LiF batteries. A very compact operation, so I'll keep this coach a while longer. I'll get a new chassis battery before the March trip to Morro Bay. I guess they had a 'Great White' fatality last week at the Strand.  RonB

Just my 2¢ worth...

For critical items that may unexpectantly dump you just when you least expect it I don't go cheap! So last time I needed an engine battery this is what I got (at BigO Tires).

Interstate MTZ 65 AGM

Interstate Batteries | MTZ-65

Hmm, can't find a link that works. Anyhow, BigO and Amazon handle them.

I alway replace my vehicle batteries at around 3 1/2 years.....so i decide when and can install it at home and not in a parking lot on a cold rainy day....also it is very hard on an alternator to keep a half dead battery charged....so plan ahead and save yourself some grief.....

Hi Steve;  Well 3x lifetime is mitigated by three times the price, so I feel that AGM is too expensive an item for this old  motorhome. It would outlive me! I'm happy with just an ordinary wet lead acid, calcium added (no maintenance).  Costco has a size 65 listed for about $100.  Lots of Costco's around the country to maintain warranty coverage.  Interstate brand. (Interstate has batteries made for them at vendor manufacturing facilities.)  Interstate Batteries - Wikipedia
I have a Trik-L-Start battery maintainer that keeps the chassis battery topped off from solar or plug-in shore power. Plus I can back feed the chassis battery from the Lithium pair temporarily to start the engine. The BalMar battery monitor also reads out the chassis battery voltage if requested.  So can the solar SB3000i if it is hooked up to maintain the chassis battery. Fran, I think your 2016 should do that. (mine isn't connected to the solar controller).  RonB
