Big Thank You to Those Helped us out at ABF

One afternoon at ABF our Fiamma awning roller stop device failed while I was winding the awning up and it exploded outward fully unraveling. Later that day Thanks to RonB we got spring arms disconnected and tied back into the awning housing also we folded the awning out of the way. A couple of days later Debbie and Joel helped us with rolling up the awning on to it's tube and then reinserting it back into the awning housing. We could now travel with this temporary repair. The final repair would require the awning to be fully unrolled and a new roller stopper unit to be reinstalled on the forward end of the roller tube with this new part. Fiamma said that could be done with two persons and the tube and awning could remain in the awning housing. We ordered a new roller stopper part from Fiamma and it was shipped to a UPS store Las Cruces where we could pick it up. A few weeks later in Valley of Fire SP at our campsite when we unraveled the awning and disassembled the front of the mechanism we discovered that the new part that came was designed for a smaller dimension roller tube. Fortunately for us the length of the new plastic sleeve insert ends up being the same as the old one and its internal shaft size was also the same so I removed the capstan cap and internal snap ring clamp and swapped out the new plastic sleeve for the old one. Now with that done the new part with the old plastic sleeve was inserted into the end of the awning roller and the rest was reassembled with the arms reattached and it all worked. We retracted the awning back and all seems to be working properly.

We wish to Thank Ron B, Joel W and Debbie W again for all of their help in getting our Awning stowed away for travel.
Debbie had the Velcro straps to contain the spring arms and vinyl straps to close up the whole Awning housing. She also provided a Great step ladder which kept us all safe. You guys really Saved Our Trip!

Joan, this is a photo of Deb's ladder. The extendable ladder in the posted photo is my extendable ladder which I bought at a paint store on sale here about 9 years ago.

It's a Little Giant Ladder I purchased from Amazon. I bought the 3 step version which fits easily in a storage compartment but there is also a 4 step version.

I use it often and feel very secure on it. :-)

Greg, you can say that again. Makes me wonder if there aren’t a whole lot more wonderful folks out there that never seem to make it into the news these days.

That was a rough repair to make on the road, glad it worked out. That is a strange part to explode but considering its age, anything is possible.
It make me a bit nervous, will our awning be next?

Halfway through our fall vacation, our Fiamma's gearbox broke. We were lucky to get it rolled up after an hour of fiddling around with it. Once tied up, we left it that way until arriving home.
A $108 later, all is good...for a while.

I first thought that our problem was the gearbox, I think that could have been an easier fix. But when I first tried to wind the awning back in I saw the shaft connection from the gearbox to the roller rotating around and around and the roller was not retracting the awning plus some small metal pieces fell out of the shaft ring area, I knew something had failed in the connection to the roller. The gear box attaches simply to awning roller through a stop device which has a shaft with 6 spring cogs which swing out to make contact for the roller to turn. All of those cogs failed and sheared off so there was no contact to the metal grooved ring and plastic sleeve which goes into the roller. Our biggest problem was trying to roll up the awning inside its housing with nothing to grab onto. So with help we disassembled it, rolled it up on the ground and slid it back in for travel. Lucky for us that was the only failier of something on this trip of our 23 year old LD.
