SAFE-T-ALERT LP Alarm
Hi Folks,

Our SAFE-T-ALERT LP Alarm started going off this morning.  It's reset itself a couple times, but then goes off again after a short time.

I've triple-checked all sources of LP leaks and can detect no odor at all.  And our fridge has been on electric since last night (we're plugged in).

Is this a failure mode for the detector itself?  I know I've replaced it once (still trying to track down the date of that).

Open to any quick thoughts (yes, we have windows open).

Thanks in advance!

The date of manufacture is stamped on the back of the detector, at least it is on the detector that is in my 2003; this one:

Amazon.com: Safe-T-Alert by MTI Industries 35-742-BR 35 Series Dual LP/CO...

It seems likely that your LPG detector is dead; they usually last about 4-5 years.

You might consider shutting the propane off at the tank and airing out your LD.  Once this is complete, if you get the alarm, I would replace the detector. YMMA

Our LP detector has made false alarms for two reasons.

First, it will go off if the dog farts near it. Apparently methane in flatus is chemically similar enough to propane to set off the alarm.
Second, ours died promptly at five years.  It is easy to replace. (I blamed the dog)

Thanks everyone, and specifically Joan for her first reply.

Indeed, my detector is 5 years old (+ 6 months).  I will order a new one.

Happily for now, the alarm has gone off and not returned during breakfast.  We'll keep it in place until we have our replacement.

Greatly appreciate the quick replies!  (Oh darn, the alarm when off again just before posting this.)

Aside from Amazon, anyone know of a brick and motor store that sells these (since we are currently on the road)?

They should be a stock item for almost any RV place.  I'd call ahead and ask to be sure, but I would be surprised if they are hard to find.

There is a more 'square' model and a more 'rectangular' model.  Let them know which you are looking for.  The LD factory sold me an adapter plate when I went from rectangle to square.

The link and picture Joan supplied has the CO monitor also. That will be the next one I order. (I'll check the date today on my old one).  Reading the reviews, people were upset about one that had been 'in the box' for two years. But I believe time doesn't count when it is powered down.   On the front it explains that two blinks of the red LED, and two blinks of the green LED, alternating signal, that time has expired for the detector. You can silence it for a while, but after 3 days you won't be able to silence it. I don't remember if it is functional after the first warning.  You can use a gas match (flame blown out of course) to test it and see if it is still responding.   A good yearly test in case time has expired while the rig was in storage.
A friend bought an older toy hauler and the alarm, when removed, was dated 2001. It was totally unresponsive. And as a remark, so was the CO alarm and smoke alarm; all dated 2001. Obviously some people disregard safety totally.  The seller was an electrical engineer!  RonB

Thanks Rich, I'll check out a Camping World or equivalent once I drive through a city.

Turns out I bought mine in January 2017, so it didn't quite make 5 years.

It's recommended these detectors be replaced every five years. It's probably time. We have had ours do the same thing. Safe-T-Alert sells a nifty LP/carbon monoxide duo that we like to use!

Thanks everyone.  Picked up a new one at Camping World in Amarillo.  They were on sale online, but not marked so in the store, but they honored the online price with no questions.  Just pays to check first, or I would have spent significantly more for this already pricey LP/CO detector.  And it's already 6 months into its 5-year life due to shelf life.  😂  All hooked up and no more alarms!

Side question, is this a fairly straightforward and East install? I’m assuming mine is due for a change out.

There are two (2) wires that should be connected to the alarm with wire nuts.  Just turn off the power to prevent any problems.  And it's much easier if you find a replacement the same dimensions as the original.  Hope this helps.

One other thing to do BEFORE working on the wires, pull the solar fuse...wire in the new unit and reinstall the solar fuse. I learned the shocking way....
