I’m a retired federal worker, both the wife and I are old enough that Medicare kicked in, so we have options. We are a little desperate as we’ve sold the home and started full timing. Our new address is not in the coverage area for the old health plan - a big surprise for us as the new address is in the same area of the country. If this is to far off topic please delete the post. What about staying with FEHB, which is also offers nationwide plans? I plan on staying on Blue Cross/Blue Shield PPO through FEHB after medicare age and opting out of medicare B and D. The out of pocket has a reasonable cap and I don't have to worry about increased medicare premium costs when I start taking money out of my TSP(401K) account. Those mandatory distributions throw single people into higher premium brackets pretty quickly. LInda 1 Likes

Maybe it's the nomadic laid back lifestyle I live, along with good genes.I haven't had health insurance in a very long time now. It's just way too expensive, and I'd rather take that money and put it into a better life now.Not a big fan of most insurance offered. 1 Likes

But this one was large enough to block my ureter and cause a kidney infection. I spent five days in the hospital.The bill came to more than $85,000. But between them, Medicare and my former employer's retiree medical plan paid for all but about $1,500 of that. Without health insurance, I'd have been nearly wiped out.The older you get, the more likely you are to be hit with large, unplanned medical expenses. It's easy to think that health insurance is too expensive... until you find out how much more expensive it is NOT to have it. 9 Likes

LIndaWe are thinking strongly to switching to Blue Cross. The issue is where are the medical records stored? With respect to you not picking up part B. There is a significant penalty for signing up late. And you pay that the rest of your life. Our retirement officer led me to believe I didn’t need part B because of the FEHB. That is not completely true.

Didn’t expect that.I have always had health insurance. Wouldnt live without it. At a total cost of nearly $220,000 that would have wiped me out. Helicopter ride was $40,000.I was just 60 and had some crazy notion that I could do without insurance until Medicare and retire at 62. I worked until I was 65. So glad I did.Kent 6 Likes

We had plans to winter in the "Q" then head across the country driving I-10 west to east then up the as coast just as spring hit. Oh 'bout 2 or 3 in the morning I was throwing up or as my sweet wife put it fulling the black tank with something new. Seems I got a Pasteurella multocida - Wikipedia infection for said dog. After spending three days in the LD I went to the ER. Total cost $12,356. Out of pocket $50. So I guess if you never pet dogs or cats or have anything to do with wild or domestic animals you will be safe.glen 2 Likes
