Brake work recommendations in Southern Colorado?
Hi folks,

We're camped at an interesting spot overlooking the Blue Mesa Reservoir (at an unbelievable 9500' -- at least that's what the literature says).

We're at Fork Lake Campground, off RT 50, and we're heading east toward Buena Vista, CO.  Which is not too far from Colorado Springs, CO or even Denver for that matter.

Anyways, we noticed the brakes start to make some noise as we arrived at the campground.  We've been traveling the scenic routes, which means lots of climbs and descents lately.  I use my transmission to the max to slow me on the descents, but in the 45-30 mph range, lots of times brakes plus 2nd gear are needed, when 1st gear is not possible.  I pump the brakes lightly, and only when needed.

So I'm just wondering if anyone might have knowledge of this area, and would be able to recommend any brake shops/mechanics in the area or along our forward route, who you know would do a good job on our 26.5' Lazy Daze.

If not, well see what we can find online, but personal recommendations, especially from 14,000 lb vehicle knowledgeable people, would be ideal!

Thanks very much in advance.  We want to stay up at altitude whenever possible to enjoy the views, and avoid the heat!

How many miles?
Have the brakes ever been replaced?
How many miles on these brakes?

This will help everyone with a diagnosis.

Diversified Body and Paint      I've had alignment and axle seal repair at this business and they do a great job. Not sure if they do brakes, but you could call. Had brakes done here: Loading interface...   Very satisfied with their work.

Thanks Jerry, I wasn't so much looking for a diagnosis, but for recommendations for a good mechanic in the area.  That said, here's the info you requested:

Miles on Thistle Dew Too:  114K
Have the brakes been replaced.  Yes, by the previous owner.  Brakes were inspected about 10K miles ago, and everything was fine, but front brakes were "getting a bit low".  So I think that is the diagnosis now 😬.
Miles on current brakes:  At least 30K.  That's how far my records go back that are handy for me to search now.

I know I'm ready for new brakes.  I was hoping to make it back to my mechanic in NH, but that's not going to happen.

So if anyone has any Colorado-based mechanics they want to recommend, we're all ears.

Otherwise, we're asking around locally, and will check online.  Thanks again

Hi Chris, thanks very much for both recommendations!  We are actually checking out a local mechanic in Gunnison, CO as we speak.   If that does not work out, we will check those out.

Well, we have now resolved our brake issue.  Turns out based on a tip from the Gunnison Visitor Center, we found Gunnison Auto and Performance (formerly known as Gunnison Tire and Auto), and they had fantastic reviews online.

So we reached out to them with our predicament, and Brian the owner encouraged us to bring it in, and told us they could get it done today!  What a great guy and so easy to deal with, professional, competent, and darn friendly.

Sure enough, the problem was metal-to-metal contact and the whole front breaks and rotors needed replacement.   We were in by 11:30 to check things out and get the estimate, done by 4:30, and the problem was resolved (I was happy with the price too).  The rear brakes still had some life left in them, so I'll take care of those when we get home to NH.

Boy, I really couldn't believe our good fortune!  We got to spend the day in Gunnison, CO which has a wonderful main street, and we contributed willingly to this great little community.  Nice lunch, got my hair cut, bought a new hat, bought some artwork that was on exhibition in a local gallery, and a few other odds and ends.  Could not have worked out better.

We also had a good road test this evening since our route subsequently took us over Monarch Pass at 11,312'.  The new brakes worked like a charm.  I feel much safer now!

Thanks for your indulgence with this request -- had we not stopped in Gunnison and found this lead, I'm sure we would have benefited Chris' recommendations, or others that may have been suggested.  Thanks to all.

Thanks for following up with your positive experience. In and out emergency repairs don't happen much anymore. You were fortunate.

Happy Trails 😀

I hope that, coming down off of Monarch, you did not miss taking a good look at Salida. That's a neat little town!   :o
