Guess the driver was clueless. Using the toad to explored unknown dirt tracks is always a good idea. It has prevented us from getting into trouble many times.
He was doomed as soon as he started heading up the mountain, few of the trails in the Durango area are suitable for an RV, much less than one pulling a toad.

That's an excellent description.

We went up Dooley Pass in Eastern Oregon by mistake. It's a paved road but the local Chamber of Commerce visitor center said they don't even recommend that road for cars. We were towing.

I get vertigo going uphill with steep dropoffs.. This road had all that and a recent fire so no trees.  Oh, and no guardrails.

White knuckle time.

"I'm going with STUPID!"

Okay, okay... I plead guilty on one count!

Crossing Lemhi Pass (Lewis & Clark route) westward into Idaho I was searching for a particular campground in which to boondock. Arriving at the correct road jct. I could not believe that what I observed deserved the title of 'campground'. So, forging ahead on the forest service road it was five plus miles before I located a turn-around. I was sweating bullets in both directions, it was a single lane road.   :o   ::)

But on Campendium it said that Lime Creek Road was good for high clearance vehicles. ;)
They figured, they had to climb up 4 or 5 steps to get into the RV, so that is high clearance.
I saw a picture of the spot they got stuck. With the week they were there, they could have used a bunch of rocks and rebuilt the washed out portion of road. Then carried on until the next obstacle stopped them.

So, not adventurous, lazy.

Nothing like a dramatic entrance into camp!
It's an unusual RV, it has four-wheel drive, look at the first scene where the RV is high-centered, the front and back tires are rotating.

This week I have been binge-watching the Matt's Off Road Recovery channel on YouTube.

Watching a 2001 Jeep Cherokee rescue, cars, trucks, and RV's from all kinds of sticky situations in the Zion area is teaching me to be more cautious and giving me tips on how to get out of some of those same situations. :-)

Google Map is my go to planning tool, although in Ohio, I’m more likely trying to figure out where I can park the 27 ft RV at a restaurant. :D

The old Cherokee were awesome vehicles, too bad they stopped making the originals. If I could, i would buy a new 1999 Cherokee XJ any day.
Our 2001 Cherokee, best toad ever.

And yes, our 2001 has  winch for recoveries (well mostly used for pulling out bushes and trees).

I worked a survey job in southern Arizona for a few years. The owner of the company used a 2001 Cherokee as one of his survey trucks. It was unstoppable except for flat tires, that wasn't the trucks fault. We carried two spares and often needed them both.
