Error on the E450 Miles to Empty Gauge
We have a 2009 E450 V10. The dashboard gauge for miles to empty shows 781 miles when it should show less 1/2 of that distance. Resetting the average miles per gallon and trip distance hasn't made a difference.  Btw, this issue just happened with the last fill-up. The gauge is setup for miles and not KMs.    I'm thinking I might disconnect the battery and see if that resets this function.  Any suggestions on how to reset that gauge?

Hi Ed;  I wonder if you've got the gas cap on correctly, or if is sealing well?  I seem to remember that the engine computer uses a loss of pressure in the fuel system to detect when gasoline was added, to reset the counters.   Looking through the Ford truck responses online shows some problems with the trip computer.  Mostly loss of the display, so at least you don't have that issue.  RonB

Hello Ron and thank you for your guidance.   I’ve checked the gas cap but I’ll check again.   I’ve tried resetting the gauges using a procedure I found online.   That didn’t help.

I replaced the engine battery about a month ago and left it disconnected for awhile while working on a stuck screw holding it in place.   I read that might cause the computer to reset or become “odd”.    That online information said it could take 10 cold starts to clear the issue.

So you can tell I’m shooting in the dark right now.

Hi Ed,
At least you can go "Old school" and rely on your fuel gage. I try to never let my gage go below 1/4 tank.

Psychologically for me, filling even more often takes some sting out of the higher fuel prices.  I hate when my fill up is over $100 or I have to complete the sale and reinsert my credit card.

Low dollar limits on gas pumps is a big pet peeve for me. At least, the truck stops I usually use (Pilot, Flying J, etc) have limits more realistic for motorhomes. We're accustomed to the $3.25/gal prices we're experiencing in the Pacific NW and CO, UT, ID, as it's been $3.10/$3.30 for 6+ months at home (Richland, WA).

I want to close out this post with the solution.  Back then, we had disconnected the engine battery for about 2 hours which caused the Miles to Empty Gauge to reset to that odd distance explained above.  After filling up the gas tank 8-10 times, the gauge gradually reflected the information accurately.   And so the solution is to simply do nothing but fill it up as we did.

Hope this is helpful.
