Re: Getting Started - A Primer For The New RV'er

Here's a tip for people just getting into RVing. You already know that you'll need some tools to deal with whatever problems and upgrade opportunities may come up while on the road. That's especially true with an older rig. If you already have a set of carefully chosen, high quality tools that you've accumulated over the years, that's great, and this tip is probably not for you. But if you're just getting started and not sure what to take along with you, here's my suggestion: bring along a general-purpose toolkit that has most of what you're likely to need most of the time, in one carrying case that has "a place for everything and everything in its place."
There are plenty of these kits on the market, and I've tried a number of them over the years. Some have low-quality tools, and most lack essentials. The best toolkit I've found is this $52 173-piece tool kit from Amazon.
Among its virtues, it has not one but three pairs of pliers (regular slip-joint, Channellock style, and needle-nose), screwdrivers, a small saw, a level, a 12' tape measure, both English and metric sockets (including spark plug sockets), English and metric combination wrenches, a good claw hammer, twenty driver bits (Phillips, slotted, hex, etc.), complete sets of English and metric Allen wrenches, a couple of clamps, wire strippers, and more.
The tools are of decent quality--not Craftsman grade, but fine for occasional use. And the selection is more complete than I've seen in a reasonably-priced toolkit. About the only thing missing is a pair of Vise-Grip style locking pliers.
I've carried this kit in my car and (more recently) truck for some time, and it has taken care of most of my day to day needs. (I used it just this morning when making PVC pipe stands for my ground-based solar panels.) Of course I do have other tools that I've accumulated over the years, but this is a good place to start. With this kit, a good cordless drill (I recommend Ryobi), and a set of drill bits, you can tackle many repairs and enhancements.
