Extended Warranty powertrain from Ford
The extension adds an additional 4 years for a total of 7 years. It can be purchased anytime within the initial 3 year warranty period.

For about $3,000 I think it's the way to go.  Especially since the 7.3L V8 is relatively new.

Speaking of which are there any here who have this motor and 6 speed transmission and how do you like it so far?

Yes, if you're going to do it, do it within the initial 3-year warranty period.  I recently called Ford and inquired about this on my 2017 (just beyond the initial warranty and they were not too interested since it is a motorhome application.

I spoke with them  yesterday and they said they'd cover motorhomes.

Was it because you are past 3 years?

I think so.  They said something about having to go to a dealer first.  Not sure why.

I think that’s a pretty high price for an extended warranty. If the new V8 has a design flaw, I think it would show up in the first three years. Ford did pretty well with the V10, other than the short thread spark plugs. Bulletproof, otherwise. I’ve only purchased one vehicle extended warranty, and that was for seven extra years at $1,500 or so. Never used it. YMMV, but I’d do some more shopping. Is this a Ford-backed extension or a third party? There are some bad actors among the latter where it’s “good luck” trying to get a claim honored. — Jon

I suspect they didn't want to inherit a known problem, hence the dealer check.   

If the vehicle is still under warranty, the problem is already theirs.

Rich, we are still under the 5-year powertrain warranty but not the 3-year bumper-to-bumper warranty.

I'm not a fan of insurance policies. Ones that extend the coverage of a new vehicle seem to be the worst.
I do my homework before purchasing anything. If I can't trust the manufacturer to make a quality product, then I move along.
That doesn't help when something unusual happens, but I'm willing to take the gamble.
If something is made well, it should have a lifetime warranty, one that reflects the pride of the manufacturer.

We don't often see that anymore. guaranteed for life from defects in materials or workmanship.

FORD Factory extended  warranty.

My mechanic buddy who owns his own shop said he'd do it because of the newness of the motor.

Those warranties are very profitable for whatever company sells them.    If you're going to run up some high mileage... maybe.
If it's going to be a typical low mileage motorhome it's not worth it.

I worked at several dealerships and can tell you that the extended service contracts are one of the MOST profitable things they sell. That is one reason Ford may be telling you to visit a dealership to purchase  a contract.

One other consideration is finding a Ford dealer that will even service a motorhome. Maybe in some areas of the country you don't have a problem with Ford dealerships being able or willing to service motorhomes. More likely than not, you will end up having repairs and maintenance done at an independent repair shop and good luck getting Ford's plan to pay an independent shop.

At the least, one might want to do plenty of research on the pros and cons of these plans before spending a great deal of cash. If one is concerned about incurring a major expense that is ostensibly covered by an extended warranty, an option might be to put the cost of an extended warranty into a maintenance and repair fund and make regular 'infusions' into that bank. This plan requires discipline, but at least the money would not going to a warranty seller which, for several possible 'gotchas', may or may not fulfill a contract.

YMMV, as always.

We bought a new Jeep last fall and still receive at least two emails a week suggesting we buy an extended warranty.
There must be a huge profit involved to so heavily persue us.
Not buying waranties over the past few decades has saved us enough money to pay for whatever repairs are needed and still be money ahead.
Another point, most RVs accumulate miles at a much lower rate than passenger cars, around 8000 miles a year compared to 15,000 miles.
By the time you accumulate enough miles to have problems, the warranty will likely be over.
