Rear brake replacement
Has anyone got a quote or replaced their rear brakes recently?  We may need to do it away from home.

Yes, we had it done at a Ford truck facility a couple of months ago. Unfortunately, we currently are 400 miles from home and the paperwork, but can provide the cost when we get back next Monday. — Jon

I would suggest using Ford.dealer parts if you don't go to the dealer. The parts you buy from Ford come with a 3 yr warranty regardless of mileage. It won't cover worn brake pads but no one does except double price junk pads. If you have an older coach like my old 2004 with 60k miles and it had towed a Subaru up and down mountains. I would suggest new brake lines as soon as possible...info on the net says as they age they collapse and cause issues with calipers.....which is another issue....Ford has had trouble with seizing calipers and aftermarket units also. The previous owner had a full front brake job( pads, hubs/rotors calipers and a brake flush) at a brake place....a year and 2k miles from when I bought it. They seized again after I bought it...the shop refused to replace the job of course. I went with all new parts including brake lines front and rear. 400 hundred miles down the road...might have been there before but coming down out of Blue ridge mountains I heard noise  from the rear...back to the shop..new calipers but the rotors and pads were able to use again...caught it in time. I think that due to the weight and heating and cooling of 5he brake fluid....this is where the issues start....condensation develops in the fluid and starts to cause rusting in the pistons of the calipers....when pads are replaced the pistons are pushed back and now rub on the rusted area in the cylinders of the calipers.....Brake flushes every 2 years and once a year if towing would prevent this costly repair. There is one thing I do on all my vehicle is between brake flushes I use a large stringe(used only for brake fluid) and remove fluid from reservoir to keep it clean and free of as much moisture as possible.....brake fluid is cheap compared to calipers. Just don't used old open containers of brake fluid...it will have moisture in it from sitting....don't go cheap use new. I think it cost me 1800 on the fronts with lines, calipers, pads, hubs/rotors fluid flushed...a little preventive maintenance makes you a happy camper. In the long run...

We were on our way to Bend from the Oregon coast when we began to hear the rear brakes, by the time we got to bend there was some metal to metal noise.  Les Schwab was able to get us in where as Ford dealers do not work on RVs here and the places they suggested were weeks out and twice the price of Led Schwab.  In all it cost $940 for full replacement with new parts, the only way they do it.  We got our 98~MB in at 8am and it was done around noon.  Karen got in line, 48 people by in line 8:15 she was number 5.  Wow Saturdays in Bend, we guess a lot of people were change overs from snow to summer tires.  We did stop in the day before to order parts so they knew we were coming.

Finally got the paperwork from the rig. Our rear brakes job at the Ford truck facility (Torrance, CA) was $469.95 (P&L) for replacement of the pads, lubing the calipers slides, machining the rotors, and test drive.  Larry’s probably rolling his eyes, but a master mechanic I’m not. 😉. — Jon

K&L,
Looks like you did well in Oregon.  I experienced similar price differences between California and Oregon.

Thanks Jon,
I did not not have much choice, I would have preferred to get our LD back home where I could have done the work for less.  They replaced everything and totally flushed the brake lines in the whole system, something that was on my list, now crossed off ✔.
