According to the new LD Spec sheet, they are ordering the chassis with the premium engine:

http://www.lazydaze.com/FEATURES.PDF
no surprise here, according to https://media.ford.com/content/dam/fordmedia/North%20America/US/product/2021/e-series/2021-E-Series-Order-Guide-Whats-New.pdf

● New 7.3L V8 Premium-rated engine (99N) replaces the
outgoing 6.8L EFI Triton V10 engine
● New 7.3L V8 Economy-rated engine (99K) replaces the
outgoing 6.2L SFI V8 FFV engine

When towing, you can never have too much power.
The 7.3l"s added 50-HP is only an 18% increase, not a huge game-changer compared to what Ford's 6.7L turbo-charged, inner-cooled diesel's 475-HP and 1050-LB of torque produces...that would be a game-changer.

Heck, even the F-series 430-HP 7.3L engine would be a big upgrade over the detuned 7.3L engine in the 2021 E450.

Greg,

That should make for one ‘hot’ LD. Just remember that golden rule: Always travel on the top 1/2 of the tank.

Could be tricky with your dream engine. By the time you get moving, you’ll likely be pulling over for fuel before you get out of the driveway.

Greg, are you looking at the spot weld or baling wire configuration?

Owner initial comment about the 2021 E450 V8 on iRV2 Forums.

"Picked up our new Forester with the V8. Have to say it is much better then I thought it would be. It pulls better, with less effort, quieter especially up hills and much less engine heat. The dog house is the same size, no change. The new dash layout and steering wheel controls are very nice, it also has stability control. Can't wait to take it out on the first trip!"

Thanks, Charles. Have you seen anymore comments on the plugs/wires issue? I am not a member of that forum.

As far as that iRV2 quote, I hope they meant 'Forrest River'. I've never heard of a 'Forrester' RV except for the Subaru model SUV. That SUV has never had a 6 cylinder engine, or an 8 cylinder.   RonB

edit. Thanks Greg. I'm surprised Subaru would allow that use for their logstanding model name.  Maybe not a unique enough name for a copyright.

There is a Forester model, Ron. Made by Forest River, of course!

The OP has not responded to replies but one did say "does Forest River...?" so you got that right.

We just drove our 2021 LD with the new 7.3L V-8 from Arizona to Michigan and returning to Florida yesterday. In our previous 2010 LD we averaged around 7.5mpg towing a Cherokee for several years. We did not tow this trip for break-in purposes. Needless to say, I am more than impressed with the new engine & drive train. We did some long steep (7+%) grades in AZ with almost no effort which did lower the mpg down to 8.5 (some generator use with that tank refill) from the previous 11.9 (during our break-in travel) we got earlier. The digital dash display also shows the average mileage both for a set trip and overall. That was 10.7 mpg for the almost 4K miles driven so far. I also feel the engine sound level in the cab is lower than in the previous LD.         I am very happy with the new Ford chassis.

Thanks for the update, Mike, and good to hear you made it back safely and had a positive maiden voyage!  Do you think the quieter cab noise is due to the lower revving V-8?  Funny, where else but on a RV forum would people be ecstatic with getting 10-11 mpg, lol!

I am very happy with the new Ford chassis.

Is the chassis  (steering, suspension, stiffness, etc) significantly different, or just the engine? I'm pleased to hear  ;)  the noise level is lower. Is it just the engine noise, or does the wind noise seem less, also?

With all the very good news about the new LDs, I’m actually grateful that there’s a 2 year waiting list.  That time frame added to my age and increasing arthritis simply pushes the possibility into “it ain’t going to happen” category.  On the other hand maybe science will develop an anti-aging treatment!  So who know? 😎

Eric,
The engine noise is less than the V-10 in my previous 2010 RB. The wind noise level is the same as the 2010 that had the new (then) nose cone. I never drove an earlier LD for additional comparisons. To me the wind noise is not objectionable even at high (+70mph) speeds.

Charles, the more I think about it, the more I'm thinking about waiting for the 2022 chassis as I don't want to be a chassis guinea pig. If you want my spot on the list (Aug 2019), it's yours!  :)

Hi Greg,
are you still contemplating waiting for the '22 chassis?  If you're still considering giving up your spot on the list,  PM me...
thanks!

Not at this time Daryl. Todd already told me my new build would be on the 2022 chassis.
