I'm reading our new Jeep's 500-page owners manual. Yes, I believe in the old saying, FTFM.
With every new car we buy, the owners manual add another 100-pages.
Cars have become so complicated, that it can take multiple readings of some sections to grok the meaning.

One advantage with a big owners manual, it's guaranteed to lull me asleep at night

Just finished "Dangerous Guests" (Kindle). This one caught me by surprise! Most/some folks know a bit about the treatment by the British of POW 'rebels' during the American Revolution but how many of you know what happened to the British and German POWs at the hands of the first Americans? Read this to find out and learn a little of our history.  ;)

Great Plains, Ian Frazier (1989).  The first and only Ian Frazier book I’ve read.  I will definitely read another.

A sort-of travelogue of Frazier’s explorations of and love for America’s Great Plains region. His story-telling is quirky and unpredictable.  His writing is beautiful.

On a side note the area the Modoc lived in and had their brief war with whites just south of Klamath Falls at Lava Fields National Monument is incredibly interesting to visit. Great battlefield tour!
The Modocs and Their War (Civilization of the American Indian Series):...

As an aside the only General killed by Indians was General Canby by the Modocs.    No  Custer was not a 'real' General.  It was only a field commission.

I'm reading a series by Nevada Barr. They are usually some kind of mystery based in a national park. The main character is a ranger. So there's a lot of nature and history while you're trying to figure out who dunnit. There are many books in the series. You can probably guess I like the nature part....

I was just referred to another author named CJ Box, who also writes mysteries in outdoor settings.  The first one was ok, so I'll try another.

My favorite so far is an author named Louise Penny, who writes a series based on a small village outside of Quebec.  I read all 16 or so, can and now I've got to be patient as she writes the next one. The first book in the series is called _Still Life_.

Always looking for good books!

"Have you read Robin Sloan's San Francisco based [novel] called 'Sourdough'?"

No, but it sounds like fun!

Do you want to read a 'sitting on the edge of your seat' kind of book? And while doing so you'll take comfort in the fact that it was written by one of our own, a Lazy Daze enthusiast full and true. I first met Martha Marks at one of the Albuquerque Balloon Fiestas.    ;)

Here's another vote for Martha's "Rubies of the Viper"! I don't normally read a lot of historical fiction, but this book held my interest from start to finish.

I like some of C. J. Box’s work, particularly the Joe Picket stories. But I have been less fond of other works I have tried.

I'll add a vote for CJ Box. Both his Joe Pickett and his Highwayman  series are good reads.  As someone who has lived in Greater Boston for most of my life, I find his descriptions of the western states very interesting. Actually, I mostly listen to his stories as audiobooks while on long drives.

About audio books while driving . . . Does anyone have a problem with staying awake while simultaneously driving and listening to audible books, podcasts, etc.?

I find it almost impossible to stay awake when listening to or watching a documentary, even when the narrator describes scenes in intriguing ways.  I call it the "David Attenborough Syndrome".  And this isn't just because I am now old and decrepit!  When we were traveling in the 90's in our 22' TK, we had a full set of Nature-type 8-track cassettes (!) that were narrated so beautifully by Mr. Attenborough.  I never saw anything passed the intros.

I'm afraid driving under those circumstances would not go well!

Another suggestion, NOTHING TO ENVY, Ordinary Lives in North Korea, written by Barbara Demick. From the dust jacket: "A fascinating and deeply personal look at the lives of six defectors from the repressive totalitarian regime of the Republic of North Korea".

I'm audio-ing a book by Nassim Taleb titled The Black Swan.  It's a fascinating book about chaos, improbability, the probability of improbability, and fallacy of "expertness" in modern society.   I became curious about randomness and chaos as applied to daily life a few years back when I rode a bicycle from San Francisco to Oklahoma via US 50 through Nevada.  I found it utterly exasperating but curious how I could ride for long periods of time on straight, open roads and encounter no perilous traffic at all, then suddenly find myself going along through a mountain pass with a guard rail on the right, and several large trucks passing me in both directions on the left.  It seemed to happen a lot --- I think!
