Number Needed?
Kenneth Fears gave this great idea (see bottom). However, I needed a little more information to make it work:

What is the distance from the street to the bottom of a 24 foot LD and a 27 foot LD (at or near OCCC)? I would think the distance would be the same?

Looking at the new pic, I tend to agree.  I think the engine can pull you up a short grade, but I think the back with a 27 or 31 model will drag as you turn into the driveway.  Further, I don't see a good way around that.  Even the shorter units may drag.

Here is something you might try.  Determine the rear overhang and the clearance, bumper to flat ground, of the rig you are thinking about.  Start with a 31' unit.  Buy a few 2x4's and sandwich some of them into a 4x4 that is the length of the rear overhang plus about 8 feet.  Then, use some plywood pieces the width of the bumper height above ground plus 3.5", and use them to attach the 8' 2x4 to the 4x4 assembly so the 2x4, on the ground, will hold the 4x4 above the ground at the same height as the bumper clearance.  Then rest the 2x4 on the bottom of the driveway and see if the 4x4 hits the street.  If it does, shorten it to match the overhang of a 27' unit.  Try it again.  Then you will know if you are going to drag and by how much, or if you will clear.

Cheap, quick, easy and dependable...

If you need a better description, or a sketch, let me know.

I can't get you a height number for my MB.  I am in the desert, uneven terrain, hydraulic levelers, and my rear bumper is only a few inches from the ground.  Hopefully someone else will be able to chime in.  I would expect that there will be little change between the 25, 27 and 31 foot models in terms of clearance.  Likewise, I would bet that the difference with full or empty tanks is only an inch or so, and you aren't building a watch.  What you are after is an approximation.

The rear overhang length will vary considerably.  On my 27' MB, the rear overhang is 110".  That should be the same for all the 27 foot models.

Thank you. I have quite a few extra 2x4s and spare plywood to use. I just need the height.

Are you looking for the distance at the rear wheels, the bumper.... I'm confused, but my 2005 RB (27') is right outside.

Lisa, since the poster is trying to figure out what will drag at the rear, I'd say the measurement from the ground to the bottom of the 2" hitch along with measurements from the ground to the bottom of the skid guard and the bumper would be helpful. Whatever looks like it will drag. Perhaps he will chime in if he sees this message.

Thank you for your willingness to help. The easiest way to explain the numbers I need maybe with the use of the following sketch and labeling. I basically need 4 numbers:

                                          A                                  B                                                C
        front bumper____________wheel_________________dual rear wheels_________rear bumper
                  D                      D                                    D                                            D                    D
road____________________________________________________________________________________________ road

A = the distance from the front bumper to the 1st wheel
B = the distance between the front wheel and the dual rear wheels
C = the distance from the dual rear wheels to the back bumper (hopefully 110 inches)
D = the distance from the ground/street/carport to the bottom of the rig

I hope this makes sense. Thank you again for your willingness to help

Thank you, Chris. Your explanation makes more sense than my sketch and labeling.

May I add a small modification ----   The center of the rear axle is the height off the ground.  The distance from this center to the rear bumper is the number you will need.   Once the rear wheel touches the angle of the road it will maintain that height.

Numbers on a 2014 TK
Axle = 15"
Axle to rear bumper 96"

Glen, the height of the rear axle above ground is of no help in this case.  The key numbers needed are the distance from the center of the rear axle to the back of the bumper, in my case 110 inches, and the clearance from the ground to whatever is on the back of the rig that might drag, most likely the skid plate.

Ken, thank you again. I really appreciate all the help you have given me. Everyone in the group has been extremely helpful.  All the Lazy Daze Newbies could not find a better group of people to answer questions.
