Re: Interesting Video on 2005 Lazy Daze Renovations... Reply #1 – June 14, 2020, 12:24:28 pm I watched it yesterday. I found the AC they installed to be interesting. Mine is still working, we have a tendency to keep things going and repairing as long as possible. I would not have painted over the wood. I have been known to like white in houses, but I love how when we are in the LD with the blinds up, the wood work in it blends into the outdoors. I would not want all white in the LD. I wonder what happened to their blinds? Our 99 has the blinds still. I have watched many of their recent videos. Steve 1 Likes

I wonder what happened to their blinds? Our 99 has the blinds still. I have seen many older LD with painted interiors. The paneling used in the door and walls will start to delaminate and cannot be easily repaired, so, many times,it gets painted. Older RVs interiors tend to darken with use and can get grungy after a couple decades of use and need renovation to look decent again. I like some white, for a brighter interior, all white is too much, looking like an RV from IKEA, and wouldn't fit my conception of what a LD should look like. YMMV.LD has changed the colors of the wall paneling, using darking panels in rigs bult inthe last 10 years or so. I prefer the older white paneling, along with the maple cabinetry, it's much brighter than rigs with the darker paneling and cherry cabinets.Everyone has their own taste.Larry 3 Likes

Re: Interesting Video on 2005 Lazy Daze Renovations... Reply #4 – June 14, 2020, 04:04:40 pm I just watched the video, and having lived in a midbath for a decade, I was very interested in every detail.I was surprised by my reaction to the all-white interior. I've always preferred white interiors in my dwellings, and in an RV's small space--especially with Lazy Daze's heavily tinted windows--I'd expect to feel even more strongly. But this rig's all-white interior seemed a bit much to me. There was no question that it was much brighter, which was great, but even to me, this looked a bit sterile. That aside, I have some experience with putting latex paint over vinyl-clad cabinetry, and durability is an issue. No matter how well you prep (cleaning, scrubbing, etc.), it just doesn't adhere well, and even the slightest touch of a stray fingernail will peel off paint. They noted this briefly in the video, but I think they're going to find it more and more of an annoyance as time goes by. Yes, you can dab on paint to cover the scratches, but it shows as an uneven surface. But regardless of how one feels about individual choices they made, it's a very instructive video--well worth watching. Reply #5 – June 14, 2020, 04:22:40 pm "No matter how well you prep (cleaning, scrubbing, etc.), it just doesn't adhere well, and even the slightest touch of a stray fingernail will peel off paint."----I believe that some LD owners are under the incorrect impression that all parts of the cupboards/cabinets are solid wood. The drawer fronts and trim pieces on the cabinets are wood, but the cabinet/cupboard panels/facings are vinyl-laminated "luan", i.e., plastic-coated hardboard, essentially the same as the walls, just a different color and texture. I agree with Andy's comments that painting over vinyl-clad surfaces is not a lasting (or easily "maintainable") treatment.

Reply #6 – June 14, 2020, 10:52:59 pm I also would not use regular latex paint.I wonder if cabinet paint would stand up longer than latex paint - I have heard it is supposed to be better. Also, home depot has a primer they say will stick to anything!! I saw it when they introduced it a while back (10-20 years ago), I have never tried it. That might stick better....Jane

It says to wait at least 17 hours between coats. Ends up with no brush strokes at all. So far my kitchen paint job has lasted 8 years with wear only visibile on very high use areas. Probably with a coat or two of water based polyurethane as a top coat, there wouldn't be any scratching. 2 Likes
Re: Interesting Video on 2005 Lazy Daze Renovations... Reply #8 – June 16, 2020, 12:24:47 am Linda, that might be the primer that I saw at Home Depot back when. Advertised as "..provide excellent adhesion to glossy surfaces without sanding." When I first say it, they had samples (I think glossy tile) and it certainly got my attention. Could not be rubbed off or scratched off with a fingernail.Jane

Reply #9 – June 16, 2020, 04:55:49 am The relatively light perhaps Maple cabinets and drawers finish on my 2003 RB is like a plastic veneer on plywood or whatever. A heater got to close to the closet door causing it to bubble. I used paint stripper to get it off which was pretty easy. I refinished all the lower kitchen and bathroom area cabinets and drawers. . I stained and made them darker. One of the drawers had a different color wood than everything else. I would recommend removing the plastic layer before priming and painting if you prefer that to stain.

Reply #10 – June 16, 2020, 09:21:24 am The underlying surface/material to be painted, stained, sealed, or otherwise treated determines the appropriate product to do the job; what works on one surface may not provide a lasting result on another. The vinyl-bonded-to-hardboard surfaces of the cupboards/cabinets in LDs (of all years, as far as I know) are "paint repellent"; a primer (and/or top coat) selected has to be formulated to adhere to plastic, or the coating will peel, flake, bubble, and/or chip off. YMMV. 1 Likes
