Titling a new LD in WA
Going to be a proud new owner of a 27 FT RB LD in a week and have run into confusing information on the process for getting a title for the new rig in Washington State - so much so that my lender wouldn't fully fund our loan since "I was doing the titling" instead of a dealer.   Not sure I see the risk there, but that's their loss, not mine.  Another story.

So WA DOL isn't much help as their website and responses to my emails are not specific to the LD purchase situation - ie: purchasing out of state, from a manufacturer, no title issued at sale, etc.  They keep referring to a "dealer" and don't seem to understand the specifics.

I'm paying CA sales tax and driving the rig to WA after delivery.  As I understand it, LD will provide me two Certificates of Authenticity - one for the Ford cab / chassis and one for the LD coach, my completed Purchase Order and a Bill of Sale.  These are what I take to the DOL.  Is that it?  is it that simple?

Any helpful feedback on past experiences with this process would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Maybe it's just me, but why pay California Sales Tax when you can take "delivery" (from a legal sense) out of state?  Don't get me wrong, as a CA resident we're happy to take your money...but it seems taking delivery out of state (as many on here have done) might clear up the WA issue?

Just a thought...good luck...and CONGRATS!!

We did exactly what you are doing 20 years ago when we bought our 2000 MB.  And yes, it was that simple.  The important document is called "Manufacture's Certificate of Origin" as I recall.  I took it and the bill of sale to the Snohomish County courthouse as opposed to one of the regional DOL offices and they seemed to know exactly what was happening.  No problem at all.  As far as why pay CA sales tax, in my case the amount was a draw, and while I really didn't like the idea of funding either state, one has little choice.  The choice I made was to avoid the hassle of the professional driver, and the right to be the first driver (it had about 5 miles on the odometer as I recall) and the ability to break it in the way I wanted to.

Am I correct in saying LDs bought new and taken possession in 2020 are considered to be 2021 models? Congratulations on your new Lazy Daze.

I'm sure that Washington and California have a reciprocal agreement for sales tax on vehicles. When you register the LD in Washington, California will 'grudgingly' forward the taxes you paid, to Washington.  I would think that your DOL can cope with this. Surely people there sell used vehicles to each other without benefit of licensed dealers.   RonB

That’s my understanding, Chris.  LD is skipping the 2020 model year and the 2021’s are on the new Ford chassis.  Hopefully the OP will confirm . . .

Thanks, Greg. The Mothership website is still showing 2019 prices. When we move into 2021, perhaps you will favor us with a new "Lazy Daze Asking Prices" spreadsheet.

Ron, once titled vehicles from any state is a different situation.  If they weren't careful about providing a title to an untitled vehicle, I could go down to CA, steal your LD, throw away your plates and ask for a Washington title.  They need to know for sure that the vehicle has never been titled before in any state.
