31' twin beds December 19, 2019, 11:12:00 am I'm considering a new 31' TB which would be mean "trading in" my 2016 MB. Have yet to decide on those barrel chairs... But, my question is the twin mattresses and what type they are. Are they something useable or is an upgrade probably necessary?I've decided to ask here rather than the factory. Frank

My '02 30' has the pullout dinette rather than the barrel chairs. Over the years I have used that dinette a lot for things other than eating and have appreciated that option. That said, I really miss having a chair to sit in. I find the couch uncomfortable for "lounging". Were I to order again, I would get the chairs. The dinette expands nicely to seat 4, something we have only used probably 5 times in 17 years. There is nice storage under the bench seats, but there already is plenty of storage in the 31'. On my previous 26.5 RB, we did have the barrel chair option and I found them to be very comfortable, although some might disagree. The 31' with dinette is not comfortable for long periods, so I added a fold up directors chair to the mix, which I find very comfortable. I agree that there are other storage areas in the 31' LD, but I do use the area for water bottle storage etc. As for the mattresses on the twin beds, we added mattress toppers on both to make them very comfortable.Good Luck,Gary

With this setup it provides good moving room throughout the front cabin. The twin bed mattresses are of a higher quality dense foam and are pretty comfortable for us. Depending on what firmness/softness you prefer, a mattress topper could be a less expensive addition. Good luck with your decision. 1 Likes

I had the entire coach reupholstered using LD material and I find the barrel chairs very comfortable. I had the foam replaced on the couch with heavy duty foam, and it is ok for sitting for short periods of time only. However, if you lay down on it, it is very comfortable. I had a new foam queen mattress custom made to fit the exact size (which is not a queen size). It is very comfortable. 2 Likes

Re: 31' twin beds Reply #9 – December 19, 2019, 08:05:57 pm We have the barrel chairs in our older mid bath and find them to be uncomfortable but looking at the newer models they look wider and bigger then what we have.We our planning on looking for a 31 footer with the dinette when we get closer to retirement I like the dinette in our mid bath to eat at and do some work on the computer while looking out the window.I will have to look at one with the dinette and see how it feels. They would be great in bedroom for my wife as she wants a fan running at night.We almost bought a 2014 IB except I couldn’t get over the barrel chairs. Wanted dinette for eating. In retrospect, we don’t eat big meals anymore and the barrel chairs would be fine. They were comfortable and moved to allow another chair if needed. I thought the sofa was comfy especially to lay down and watch TV. I liked the queen bed. The whole unit felt so comfortable and homey just like a LD should.Ron

Re: 31' twin beds Reply #13 – December 19, 2019, 11:21:22 pm Barrel chairs, either you love them or you hate them.The only way to know for sure if they are for you is to sit in one for a period of time.The chairs have changed over time, our 1983's LD barrel chairs were narrow compared to the much wider ones in our 2003 FL and later models.We love them.Larry

Not cheap like most you see, they are solid metal. One thing I dislike about the 30IB is the lack of cooling. I changed out the a/c, which was original and barely working, with a new Coleman 15k unit and it is much better. But quite frankly, the 30 LD should have two a/c units, one closer to the cab in the front, and one in the bedroom. I guess it would require a 50amp service though to be able to run both at the same time. 1 Likes

I've been in some pretty hot weather and never had a problem keeping cool with 1 a/c as long as you don't try to cool down a 100* interior.Chris 2 Likes

The barrel chairs are nice but something of a pain to use with the fold-out table while dining.Dan

On the other hand, it blows straight towards the TV in the front, where I'd prefer a better angle towards the barrel chair by the stove (where I sit to watch TV/flip up the table for writing or other tasks. I do like that the chairs swivel, & they're much more comfortable than the sofa. Should I follow the lead of some other adventurous souls who have pulled out carpet (& countless staples) to replace with vinyl sheet/planks, I think I'd like some sort of locking caster, though the chairs might generally move better on a smooth surface...any thoughts from those who've replaced the carpet?Dan-- I'll look forward to your chair experiment (I agree the barrel chairs aren't terribly comfortable for eating, though the folding lawn chair I place in front of the sofa is really low, but it's awkwardly far to just sit on the sofa).The 31'TB does seem a bit extravagant for just me & the 4-Legged Alarm, but it gets cozy fast when the granddaughters come out to Grandma's House when I go to Texas, but I bought this floorplan with the specific hope of having company to share the space, so all is good.Lynne 1 Likes
Re: 31' twin beds Reply #20 – December 21, 2019, 10:13:36 am In reference to air condition blow towards the front, using a thin sheet of copper metal, I bent it somewhat downwards so it blows towards the table area, works fine. We find the rear area blow is adequate with out ant modifications.I built plywood 1/2 inch platforms to fit under our barrel chairs legs to save the carpet and it makes moving the chairs easier.They do not move when driving and are most comfortable while eating er own, watching TV or just relaxing. 10 years now and all is good.. Chair upholstery is still like new. And so it goes to eachhis or her ownBob
Re: 31' twin beds Reply #21 – December 21, 2019, 10:33:29 am I will try to answer questions that several people have raised about my post.First of all, the barrel chairs are reasonably comfortable but definitely not barcalounger(?) type. It would be nice if they were somewhat larger, but they barely fit through the entry door and you have to remove the base at that. Secondly, we bought current fabrics from LD when we reupholstered the coach and used ultraleather as an offset. The price is high, but according to my upholsterer, the quality was excellent. I decided to go with LD fabric to mimic a more current LD look. I have not taken the coach out since replacing the original dometic breeze 12.5k unit with a 15k coleman unit. I am hoping that this new unit will do a sufficient job of keeping the interior cool. I seriously considered putting in another dometic unit because I could reuse the interior panel. But both of my RV mechanics recommended the Coleman as the company was easier to work with when you had problems. Finally, I pulled out all of the carpet, and while it is not a terrible job, there are thousands of staples. I installed a roll goods product, so have no seams in the floor from front to back. Needless to say, the install was not for an amateur so I had one of my flooring vendors do it. If I were doing it again, I would use a luxury vinyl plank and glue it down. I could install that myself, but would have to use some type of base molding at the edges. And the barrel chairs do move around on the lino so I keep the seatbelts snugged down while traveling. 1 Likes

The chairs we bought to try didn't leave enough leg room to the fold-out table. Put another way, the chairs were too high. For anyone contemplating a replacement for the barrel chairs, pay attention to the distance between your proposed replacement chair's seat height and the bottom of the table.Dan 2 Likes
