Unless you (can) change your service (not billing) address, you cannot receive locals with either.

Since DirecTV was bought out by AT&T, changing the service address has become very difficult, if not impossible (this from many discussions over on the Escapees Discussion Forums).  DirecTV does offer DNS (Distant Network Services, i.e., network channels...ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC) out of either New York or Los Angeles depending on where you're RV is registered.  However, I believe that DNS requires a separate account from your home account, unless you might be successful in turning off your home account during the period when you travel.  A PITA, IMO.

Dish, on the other hand, does allow the changing of services address in order to pick up local stations in the area where you're traveling.  And, the Winegard satellite dish (a dome, I presume since you said it was factory installed) is capable of receiving both HD and SD service with Dish whereas with DirecTV, you can only receive SD signals with a dome.

If you change from DirecTV to Dish, it will most likely require the dish to be reprogrammed for the new service.  Call Winegard with the make and model of your satellite dome and they can advise what would be necessary.

Molly,

I assume you tried calling Direct TV Customer service and asked them?  You are getting some channels, correct?  That would indicate your receiver box is working.  I recall reading a couple of months ago that my old receiver box was no longer going to work because of system upgrades.  Basically, the regular definition receivers need to paired with a "dumbed-down" HD capable receiver box.  I was able to get Direct TV to come to my home and install one of these newer boxes.  I was told that they would not come to an RV lot nor a place of business to install the new box.  It also helped that I had Direct TV at my home with multiple slave receivers.  Most RV users have standard definition receivers (single Lnb) that won't deliver a HD image (requires a 3 Lnb) to our HD TVs.

I've had Dish for the last nine years, in both a stick house and in my RV [I take the DVR receiver with me when I travel]. I also have the GSPlus winegard portable sat. When traveling, it is mounted on the rear ladder on a platform I purchased separately. When parked [like now], I remove it from the RV and can place it up to fifty ft. out in search of a clear line of sight.
I can receive *both* SD and HD at the same time, and when I move from one spot beam area to another, I call Dish customer service and change my current address. They need an actual address so if you are boondocking, pick an address close to where you are parked. That way, within a few minuets to an hour, you will receive the local channels.
When ATT bought Direct, they also prevented Dish from receiving HBO [grrrr] so I have a separate acct. w/HBONow for $14 mo. so I can stream their programs on other devices, [laptop, phone, pad] but can't use the DVR for recording. They've been in "negotiations" now since 2018 and I don't see ATT letting them have it back any time soon. One can hope.
I looked into switching back to Direct this summer, and their pricing is higher than Dish for what I want. Their packages are very hard to compare content, to make sure those channels I want are included.
I'm sticking with Dish for various reason, and the ability to switch spot beam areas for local access by phone, and the ability to receive both SD and HD without having to do anything w/the port. sat. simplifies my life. Good luck!

We've never subscribed to HBO, so I didn't realize that it's not included on Dish anymore.  No big deal for us, but would be a bummer for those who watch HBO.

Still, that wouldn't be enough for me to change to DirecTV.  For one thing, I want to be able to change my local channels as we travel which isn't possible anymore with DirecTV (and DNS would give us only Los Angeles stations, which has programming on too late especially when we're in the Mountain Time Zone during the winter).

One of the biggest reasons, however -- for us -- is that it would require a new Winegard Trav'ler installed on our roof (around $2,000 installed).  That just isn't going to happen.

If you subscribe to Dish Outdoors for an extra $7/mo you can change your service address with an app on your smartphone or tablet.
