Came across two vintage LDs while riding my bike in Sunset Beach, CA
While riding my bike this past weekend, I rode by two vintage LDs in Sunset Beach, CA.  I took a couple of pictures and will include them below.  I knew, of course, that some older LDs were delivered on a Chevrolet chassis, but this was my first time seeing one bearing a GMC emblem.  Maybe someone on this forum can identify the approximate years of production?

Best,

Gary

Looks like mid-80’s models. I’ve never seen one on a GMC chassis but perhaps some of our “old timers” will chime in.

Gary,

Those look like the ones I saw a couple of weeks ago, I believe they were in the parking lot of an old Fish restaurant. Not much action there. My sister wouldn’t let me turn back to take pictures of the LDs.

Glad you got them.

Both rigs are from the the mid-80's, they have the dark anodized window frames that were introduced in 1984.
The GMC is the first one I have seen too but there is no difference between a Chevy and GMC except usually for cosmetics.

The 22' models are very popular beach rigs, they will fit in a normal beach parking lot spot without sticking out too far. The 22' models and the 23.5's, up until 2002, were narrow bodies, five inches less in width than the later models.

"...there is no difference between a Chevy and GMC."

Here's a thought... since the Chevy and the GMC vans of that vintage are, for most purposes, clones, could it be that the GMC grill was a replacement for the Chebby?   ::)

Possible, Steve, but the emblems on the front fenders differ as well.

That old restaurant parking lot has really become a haven for the motor homeless and other bandit campers.

Annual day passes for either the state or city beaches are $175/year, plus the lots are open from 6am to 10pm. So, all these rigs have to do is find an 'elsewhere' to be overnight. Overall, it's a really sweet deal, which is why it seems the RV population is always increasing.

The real down and outers don't have the coin to hang by the beach during the day. So, not only do they have nothing to do all day (vs hanging out with a beautiful ocean view), but they become known to law enforcement. Once vacant lot day use becomes too obvious, then the city makes moves to force the owners chain off the property.

The dance between day use and short overnight has been going on for years. As long as they vamos before opening, the commercial businesses don't seem to care. But catch someone there after 7-8am, the shop keepers call the cops.

Kind of off topic, but a travel advisory:   For those of us who might need a restroom (not traveling in MH) traveling south on 5 from LA to San Diego. You won't be able to use the Aliso Parkway rest stop. The Homeless have found it, the police can't kick anybody out. The last few times through, I had to go against traffic and park in the shadow of a Semi trailer. This was about midnight each time.  No fee, water and light, and police presence, nice ocean view. Is that the one just north of Oceanside, Ron?

"Is that the one just north of Oceanside"

It's the one in Orange County, north of Camp Pendleton and the Border Protection Station.  I was there about a month ago to walk an impatient dog and use the restroom myself.  It was moderately clean and no homeless around.  Of coarse it was about 1:00pm in the afternoon and I would NOT want to be there after sundown.

P.S.  I should have done a better job reading Ron's advisory.  I was talking about the rest stop heading north on 5, while Ron's advisory was about the rest stop heading south.  oops.

I’ve only stopped at the southbound one. It’s a pretty nice rest stop before heading into San Diego. Hopefully they’ll clean up the homeless problem there so travelers can enjoy it, as intended.
