Ceramic vs Wax Paint Coating July 16, 2019, 05:44:51 pm I’m preparing to “wax” our Lazy Daze for the first time. I’ve been using Polymer type waxes on my auto the past few years. Recently, I’ve been exploring use of “Ceramic” coatings. I’m told and have read that, properly applied, ceramic coatings eliminate the need for wax (at least for 5 years or so), and greatly reduce washing effort. Apparently silica (in form of SiO2 I believe), fills the microscopic pores in paint and forms a very hard, hydrophobic (water repellant), barrier on its surface. The main downside seems to be cost, driven by extensive preparation and application labor (I’m receiving quotes in the $3000 range). My thinking is that the initial cost when amortized over time compares favorably to the cost of waxing and the reduction in washing time/effort sounds pretty good too. Has anyone on the forum considered this option and either taken or rejected it? Any insight would be appreciated. Warren

I have looked at several videos of Mequiars, Mother's, and Turtle "ceramic" polishes. One of the things being touted was the ease of application once the surface was clean. And those products are fairly inexpensive too. I have been using a polymer kind of polish on our rig since new and have been very pleased with the durability and ease of application. I am a do it yourself kind of guy. I don't think I could pay $3000 to have it done and sleep at night. But hey, that's just me.Steve K.

We wax the 27’ MB twice a year with synthetic wax. It takes about 6 hours or so depending how my body is working and 2 Aleve. This LD is a 2009. 1 Likes
Re: Ceramic vs Wax Paint Coating Reply #10 – August 02, 2019, 06:53:27 pm I wash the entire rig with the car wax in solution/bucket approach starting on the roof back towards the ladder. I've never noticed the roof being slick, but I don't really go up there much. Then I do the sides from below. The next day I start waxing, with a step stool, with Meguiar 'gold' carnauba. It can take several days to finish. The hardest parts are the cab area and underneath the cabover. Hood, fenders and doors aren' too bad. Fiberglas under skirts need it the worst. The paint seems to be degrading there first, and the painted sides are holding up the best. I've noticed some warping of the tire cover from the heat just recently. Going on twenty years now. Re: Ceramic vs Wax Paint Coating Reply #11 – August 02, 2019, 07:54:12 pm I hate waxing. I do it twice a year with Nu Finish; once for the entire rig (not the roof) and a second time one month later. LD stays shiny all year. NuFinish is pretty easy to apply and buff off. Waxing still sucks.Harold
