Ridgecrest
Robin and Lydia weren't home in Ridgecrest and missed all the fun.

Robin's email:

"Thanks for asking. We actually arrived up north I. Santa Rosa late last night. So, we are missing the “fun”, NOT.

Our neighbor took pictures inside our house. We have some messes to clean up but the house is ok and another friend turned our gas off. "

We felt it here in the Tehachapi area pretty good. Luckily, not too much damage, even in Ridgecrest near the epicenter.

Up here in the Bay Area the loudest rumble was when the Media went bezerko over one garage fire!   :o   ::)   ;)

Steve, yes the media likes to entertain.
I remember the big earthquake end of 89 in the bay area.
I was in LA area the time and the media focused on the small areas that had huge destruction (bridge, couple blocks in SF that were totally flattened, etc), so that our impression was the entire bay area had been razed - even a day or two later.

When I was up there a couple months after the quake, it was only a few blocks in SF and Santa Cruz (and the bridge) that has=d serious damage - outside of those area there were some cracked chimneys, windows, etc. but nothing like the media had made it look like (everything just rubble on the ground).

After the Loma Prieta earthquake in 89,  one block in the Marina district was ablaze.   The 3 main networks took up station on separate corners for reporting.   Their coverage gave the impression there were many areas burning.  Lazy Bones nailed it with 'bezerko'.

Glad to hear the perspective on the ground out there.  The only things I've seen on the news was the garage fire & debris thrown off store shelves--I suppose it's in the eye of the beholder: if it were my garage on fire or my store with broken glass & merchandise strewn about I might have a different perspective, but glad there were no serious injuries.

We have periodic news items reminding us that the New Madrid fault down in the Bootheel may be due anytime.  The last Big One in 1811-1812 changed the course of the Mississippi, & reportedly caused water to flow upstream (I suppose rather like a Midwest version of a tsunami).  Of course St. Louis wasn't much of a town back then, nor was there the population & other infrastructure of today throughout the area;  I don't think there's been much of a push to address things like building codes/etc. like y'all have out there.  SW Missouri has also picked up some activity from the fracking tremors Oklahoma has been experiencing.

My brother lives in Ridgecrest and works at China Lake doing top secret stuff and is usually in Afghanistan or on some ship in the gulf but he was home for this. I said to him okay what did you guys do, test some new bomb that got out of control. He gave his usual answer to all my questions. "Can't say, top secret". LOL

"... and are close to China Lake."

China Lake NAS covers a huge area or is there a physical location by that name? The main gate to the base is right there on the north side of Ridgecrest, not far from the Tireman's Shop.   ;)

NAWS China Lake is located in the Western Mojave Desert region of California, approximately 150 miles north of Los Angeles. The installation is the Navy's largest single landholding, representing 85 percent of the Navy’s land for RDAT&E use and 38 percent of the Navy’s land holdings worldwide. In total, its two ranges and main site cover more than 1.1 million acres, an area larger than the state of Rhode Island.

BTW, if you have access to military facilities, there is a RV campground at China Lake. A little warm out there this time of the year, though:

Kind of a side issue but if you know anybody that works on base and can get you in there's a fantastic petroglyphs area to explore. I think there's an organized tour for the public too but not sure on that. Well worth seeing if you are in the area. There's also a great weapons museum worth  touring.

To further hijack this thread.  ;D  The Maturango Museum has organized tours.  Petroglyph Tours
When we went in 2009, we got hold of a list of certified guides, contacted one and got on a small private tour.

Wow, I can't believe it has been ten years since our group toured the petroglyphs..
It is by far the most intense concentrations of rock drawings we have seen and it's well worth the hassle of joining an organized tour.
You also get to see some interesting blown up stuff while driving through China Lake, on the 45 minute drive to the petroglyph site.
Say hi to Barbara.

Hi Larry!  It seems the older we are the faster time seems to pass by.  It's hard to believe that we've been full timing for over 4 years now!  :o  Not very concentrated, but there are lots of petroglyphs along 9 Mile Canyon Road near Price, UT.  We also like Three Rivers Petroglyph Site north of Alamogordo, NM.

Another interesting photo from the Ridgecrest area. Came with this comment:

Ground rose up 12 feet here somewhere near Trona/China Lake. Those are USGS investigators.

The base is starting to open after many and continuing inspection. We all know things are broke. It’s the first we get to see of it.

The fault zones are from Coso geothermal down se through north range

In town we lost a movie theater a gym and the college.

The hidden damage is starting to show.

The 4.9 morning jolted is out of bed and Loma Prieta was nothing like it. These are jackhammers.
