Tioga Pass June 22, 2019, 05:27:40 pm In the spirit of the recent June lake thread, for those who haven't heard, Tioga pass opened yesterday. However, it's a very limited/restricted opening, with through traffic coming from Lee Vining allowed only between 10-11am and 3-4pm. In addition, you cannot stop/pullout anywhere, and all the facilities in Tuolumne (ranger HQ, store, High sierra camp, etc) are still closed.Yosemite National Park Announces Limited Access on Tioga Road Beginning on...I've been following CalTrans and park updates fairly closely, since I'm driving up to the Bay area from OC via US395 next week to meet family for the 4th of July. I'm leaving on Monday & taking our Sienna, and will be doing a series of quick back-country 1 nighters to some prime fishing locations. My first stop are the Cottonwood lakes, which @ 11k may still be iced over, but they are home to the state's golden trout fisheries. The Ecological Angler - Fly Fishing Cottonwood LakesMy initial plan was to go up to Bridgeport and then Sonora pass, which opened two weeks ago. I'm now considering Tioga; I go up almost every year, but the traffic restrictions + Valley on the 4th of July might be a bit too much. (I need to make it to Saratoga by 4pm to meet my wife who is flying up to SJO.)Anyway, for those who haven't had a chance to experience the Sierra after a heavy snow year, it's one of the marvels of the world. Truly epic, and worthy of making a special trip. 3 Likes
Re: Tioga Pass Reply #1 – June 22, 2019, 06:03:03 pm Snerf, we recently experienced some of our generous snowfall at Lassen NP. This is the back patio of the south entrance visitor center.

Re: Tioga Pass Reply #4 – June 24, 2019, 08:37:57 pm Tuolumne meadows from yesterday. For those familiar with the area, this photo was taken by a Pacific crest trail (PCT) hiker @ Soda springs (Parsons memorial). Regular traffic cannot stop nor pull out - for example the parking @ Lembert dome in the background. For those not familiar with the area, the Tuolumne river begins @ the confluence of Dana & Lyell creeks at the bridge near the campground (to the right of Lembert dome). This shallow lake is usually a meadow as the Tuolumne languidly drifts along near the tree line across the water. Tioga pass road (SR 120) is just past the trees, making the meadows a favorite place to pull over, stop & stroll.Once facilities are open and the general area is open (2-4 weeks?) for business, the meadows should be incredible.CalTopo - Backcountry Mapping Evolved 4 Likes

Re: Tioga Pass Reply #7 – June 25, 2019, 01:40:47 am We will be in the area for the week or so, if the road opens without restrictions, we will probably check the meadows on a day drive and report back. Doubt there is much or any snow left in the meadows, being 1400' lower than Tioga Pass. Two years ago, the Pass didn't open until July 3rd, we drove it that day and the meadows were clear. The Tioga Pass Lodge took a beating and still has not reopened.Larry
