battery monitor shunt installation tips
I recently purchased a BMV-712 battery monitor. I'm looking to install it in the coming week. I haven't yet pulled out the battery tray to see what gauge wire is installed there. For folks that have installed battery monitor shunts, do you typical cut the existing battery wire and crimps connectors in to attach the shunt, or do you add a short run of wire? Any and all advice welcome.

When I installed the shunt for a Link-10 in our LD, I mounted the shunt on the side wall of the battery box and bought a short black battery cable (12"-18") with lugs at both end.  I moved the ground cable from the negative post of the batteries to the ground side of the shunt and used the new cable from the battery negative to the battery side of the shunt.

We choose to put our shunt inside (TK).   Our power center is in the large inside cabinet area just inside our coach door and had tons of extra space.  Our batteries were just outside by that cabinet in the battery bin (which actual comes into the cabinet some) and didn't have a lot of extra space.   We made sure we had enough length in the wires so that the battery could be pulled out to check water without taking the cables off.  Because our original battery wire had just a little slack in it, we added a second battery wire - one going to the shunt and one coming from the shunt and continuing to the power center.

I suggest checking the condition of your battery wires and deciding if you want to replace it or it looks ok to you.

How did you attach the shunt to the battery box? I'm trying to decide if just using something like the 3M 5200 FC will suffice, or if I should physically attach it. I want to make sure whatever I do won't allow any gas transmission to the inside of the coach if I go thru the battery box.

Along those lines, what's going to be the best way to seal the penetration point where I'm going to have to run the wire from the shut up to the display unit?

I mount the shunt on a plywood bead and then screw it to the battery box. You can use sealant to seal the screw holes, if desired.
Where the battery cables pass though the battery box , into the interior, use a sealant, such as 5200 FC to permanently seal the penetration.
