Barn Queen revisited.
We saw the 01 IB today with under 11000 mi. The interior was perfect. All the house systems worked. No odors or signs of water infiltration. I checked where the rear bumper attached. Both corners had soft spots approximately 3” wide. The rest was solid. All the seams looked they were original. It’s been stored under a carport most of its life.
It ran well . A little vibration in the front at 60 miles an hour. New tires but an off brand. Felt like maybe needed rebalancing.
Also cruise controls not working. Maybe a fuse? The step motor doesn’t work and the generator won’t start.
Has bilstein shocks and a steering stabilizer.
Owner wants $21000. I appreciate opinions on price and also what should I think about replacing if we move forward on this. Are the soft spots an indicator of worse unseen rot?  How long do shocks last? Also has two solar panels.whats the life expectancy of those?
Overall my wife and I really liked the layout, especially the windows.
Thanks

If there is no water damage, the price seems reasonable. What do mean by "soft spots"? Genset repairs can get pricey. Elec. step not that bad. I have 3 original panels on my '02 IB and they work just fine. Shocks are original Bilstein and also function well but probably should be replaced soon at 80k miles. “Soft spots” would be a deal breaker for me at any price.

The specific area where the rot is is where the rear bumper attaches. I believe it’s limited a few inches in from the left and right ends. There’s no easy way to get access to see behind the rear corners from the inside. I took some photos I’ll try to post later today.

You can access the lower, inside of the rear corners by opening the rear exterior cargo doors.
The inside of the rear closet doors exposed the upper inside of the corners.
Rot in this area is usually more extensive than what first appears. The cause of the leaks could be loose end caps, a leaking rear window  (a very common problem) or a roof seam leak.
The window can leak between the grass and frame or the frame and the exterior wall or both.
Lots of rear windows leak and are replaced.

Poke around some more the inside of the rear, exterior storage compartment and the closets, take your ice pick with you.

I don't wish to frighten you, but this thread is what came to mind when you said 'soft spot'....
Rot Repair

A couple of 'soft spots' on a travel trailer led to a fairish amount of work,  great learning experiences, and a raft of new tools that have lasted much longer than the trailer did.

As JCT says YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary).

The IB has a great layout, but is heavy

Good luck

Hey now! Who’s to say my “soft spot” experience wasn’t a good time! Lol

I looked in the rear closets and the wood was solid everywhere I could see. The only area that wasn't is pictured below. Also a picture of an area of paint electrolysis.

I don't think perfection is expected in an 18 year old rig. If you're willing and able to do the repairs (like Cor2man did), I think it's a good price.  If repairs need to to be farmed out, it could get expensive.

It looks like there might be some termite damage.

The corrosion under the ladder appears to come from the inside. That would be consistent with a long-term leak on the right-hand side of the rear. Although you don't label it, it appears as if the rear corner rot pictured is on the left-hand side. Taken together, I would not be surprised to find water intrusion throughout the rear wall; it could be limited to the top of the window down.

If I were considering this coach, I'd first get an estimate from the factory on a complete rear wall repair, then factor that into the purchase price.

I wonder if the carport was shorter than the LD, and the back end sat out in the weather.

You really need to inspect the lower rear corners, viewed from the exterior storage compartments.
The one photo shows extensive, long term rot,  the rear wall may need to need fully disassembled to get at all the damage.
Many times a still intact piece of paneling can hide extensive rot, it is really hard or impossible to find during an inspection.

While the low mileage is nice, I'm not sure what it is worth. The rear wall rot damage could cost up to $10,000 to repair and I assume that the batteries and off-brand tires may need replacement along with whatever else has gone bad.  It is an 18 year old RV that has sat most of its life.
RVs wear out just from age and it's obvious that the rig was not parked under an awning all of its life.
Since the rig was not inspected by an experience RV tech,  there may be additional rot in other places that are not easily identified, I would be hesitant to buy it without having it inspected..

My advice to those who call and write me with such questions is to consider it a crap shoot and to keep looking unless you are the type to dig in and do the repair yourself.  There are very few like Cor2man in the group.
Opening the walls to repair rot is difficult, dirty work that few have the skills and inclination to do properly.

2001 LDs have the early V10 and 4L100 transmissions, neither was totally debugged at that point.
Blown spark plugs and failed transmissions were more common during this time period, than the later, 2004+ models.

Dollars to doughnuts the rear wall is rotted.  I’d really be interested to know what percentage of users here have rear corner/wall rot. Kinda makes me wanna remove my entire ladder/rack and reseal just for the “fun” of it.

Show the owner my pics...buy it for half price...rebuild it.

Not sure what mine is worth now that I’ve shown the “internet” it had serious flaws...but I’d like to believe a rebuilt LD is better off than a LD that appears fine with hidden damage.

You mentioned the LD was under a car port. Wondering if the rear was exposed to rain blowing in? If so, that could explain the rear end rot.

I showed him cor2man’s excellent photos. He believes the damage is limited to the areas I found. Can’t argue because he may be right. I appreciate everyone’s responses and will continue the search. Probably post 2004. If anyone is interested in this one it’s in Claxton Ga. I found it on Craigslist.

Good luck with his sale. Mine was in significantly better shape than that and well...we know what was hiding underneath
